Description
Azalyn Goza, formally known as Empress Goza the Sixteenth of the Holy Raalgon Empire, ascends to the throne as a teenager following the sudden death of her father, Emperor Goza the Fifteenth. The transition is not a natural one; her father’s assassination is orchestrated by Prime Minister Naku Ra Wang, who subsequently frames the United Planets Space Force for the crime to push the two powers toward war. This event abruptly ends any semblance of a normal childhood for Azalyn, forcing her to shoulder the immense burden of leading an interstellar empire while still in her youth. She carries a deep-seated resentment for this lost innocence, often comparing her own feelings of confinement and duty to the plight of Princess Ann in the film Roman Holiday.
In her public role, Azalyn projects a tough, commanding, and sometimes imperious facade, believing it necessary to maintain authority over her vast domain. She can be demanding and expects her orders to be carried out without question, a trait born from her isolated position rather than genuine malice. However, this stern exterior masks a more vulnerable, inexperienced, and occasionally selfish young woman. When she is among trusted friends or away from the pressures of the court, she allows herself to show genuine emotion, revealing a kind-hearted and vivacious personality that her duties have long suppressed. Her initial rule is marked by the manipulations of her court advisors, particularly Prime Minister Naku Ra Wang, who exploit her youth and inexperience to conceal the true nature of the empire's conflicts and consolidate their own power.
Azalyn’s primary motivation throughout the series is to navigate the treacherous waters of imperial politics, learn to rule wisely, and protect her empire from those who would deceive her. She is keenly aware of her inexperience and seeks guidance from those she can trust, most notably the venerable and honest Admiral Ru Baraba Dom, whom she considers her only reliable advisor. Her journey is one of transformation from a political pawn into a thoughtful and farsighted sovereign, learning to consider the consequences of her decisions not just for herself, but for all her people. This growth is spurred on by several key figures, including Yuriko Star, a captured officer of the United Planets Space Force who challenges Azalyn’s perspective and makes her realize that her decisions have real-world consequences for both friends and enemies alike.
Her relationship with the titular Captain Justy Ueki Tylor is the most personally significant. After his capture by the Raalgon military, Tylor escapes and stumbles upon Azalyn without knowing her identity. He treats her with an informal and casual kindness she has never experienced, even helping her recover a small creature she calls Paco-Paco. This nickname, derived from the pet, becomes her affectionate term for Tylor, as he is the first person to allow her to simply act like the carefree teenager she truly is. She states that she feels a profound sense of peace around him and develops a deep romantic affection for the irresponsible captain. This bond profoundly influences her role in the story, as she twice intervenes to save Tylor from mandatory execution. The first time, she whimsically declares him her personal pet to bypass military law. The second, after he saves her from an assassination attempt orchestrated by Wang, she openly defies her advisors and insists on accompanying the injured Tylor aboard his own ship, the Soyokaze, to ensure his recovery.
Her time aboard the Soyokaze reveals her mischievous and cunning nature. While she can act bratty and demanding, especially where Tylor is concerned, she also demonstrates a flair for unorthodox strategy. In one notable instance, to avoid being sent back to the empire and to remain close to Tylor, she falsely claims to be pregnant with his child, citing bizarre biological differences between their species. This deceptive act, while highlighting her selfish streak, also showcases a sharp, tactical mind willing to use any means necessary to achieve her goals. Her character development continues as she learns to harmonize her empathy and personal desires with the cold-eyed pragmatism required of a ruler. Later iterations of the story, such as in The Irresponsible Galaxy Tylor, depict her as having entered a state of suspended animation or stasis, with her legacy subtly linked to the Tylor bloodline.
