Description
Emi Hideyo Hana is a young woman who joins the crew of the space cruiser Soyokaze driven by a powerful personal motivation. She is the granddaughter of Admiral Robert J. Hanner, a distinguished but retired officer of the United Planets Space Force, and she is the twin sister of Yumi Hana. The two sisters are nearly identical in appearance, both having brown hair and brown eyes, and are typically distinguished only by the direction in which they tie their hair.
Emi’s entire journey into military service begins with her feelings for the series’ protagonist, Justy Ueki Tylor. She and her sister developed a deep affection for Tylor after he successfully resolved a hostage crisis in which they were involved. It was this longing to be close to him that motivated Emi and Yumi to volunteer for the United Planets Space Force and eventually secure postings aboard his ship, the Soyokaze. While she might not have passed the standard aptitude tests with flying colors, Emi possesses significant skill and qualifications as a fighter pilot, marking her as a capable and practical individual in high-pressure situations.
Within the story, Emi serves as one of the ship’s fighter pilots, operating alongside her sister. Her role brings her into close contact with other key members of the crew, most notably the ship’s ace pilot, Kojiro Sakai. Initially, Kojiro harbors a strong aversion to women, but he is forced to put this aside when tasked with training Emi and Yumi. Through this training and shared duty, a relationship forms between Emi and Kojiro that deepens over time.
Emi is a character whose development is defined by her dual motivations. Her initial decision to join the military is born from a romantic infatuation with Tylor, whose unorthodox and luck-driven methods she admires. However, her time on the Soyokaze allows her to grow into her own as a dedicated soldier and pilot, shifting her focus to her duties and the new bonds she forms with her comrades, particularly Kojiro Sakai. In the original novel source material, this relationship culminates in her eventual marriage to Kojiro, marking a clear evolution from a girl chasing a crush to a woman building a life with a fellow warrior. Furthermore, the novel also elaborates on the sisters’ abilities, granting them a form of telepathic communication that makes them an exceptionally formidable team in combat.
