OVA
Description
Director Anderson holds the position of director of the International Science Organization (ISO) in the original Gatchaman television series, where he wields ultimate authority over the organization. His background indicates significant scientific expertise, as he is able to understand complex concepts including nuclear power and neutron reactions. Despite his high-level administrative role, Anderson personally handles critical ISO operations, such as transporting sensitive components like the ultracomputer core aboard his own specially equipped private jet.

In terms of personality, Anderson is portrayed as a serious and efficient authority figure who chairs meetings with international representatives to combat global threats like Galactor. He enjoys cigars during his downtime, suggesting a preference for moments of quiet reflection away from his demanding duties. His leadership style involves overseeing major initiatives such as the Mantle Plan while maintaining oversight of allied forces like the Red Impulse Squadron through the ISOs Information Bureau.

Anderson s primary motivation throughout the series is the protection of the world from Galactors destructive activities. He consistently seeks to leverage all available resources, including the Science Ninja Team, to counter the organizations schemes. His role in the story is that of a high-ranking official who, despite his authority over the ISO, initially has no direct command over the Science Ninja Team formed by Dr. Nambu. While Anderson eventually learns the civilian identities of the team members, operational command remains solely with Dr. Nambu, and Anderson cannot issue them direct orders. Instead, he frequently requests their assistance during crises and defers to Nambus scientific and security judgments, consulting closely with him on matters related to Galactor activities.

The relationship between Anderson and Dr. Nambu is central to his function in the narrative. Anderson respects Nambus expertise and relies heavily on his counsel. Over time, Anderson develops a deep respect for the capabilities of the Science Ninja Team, even though he is never able to interact with them in a direct command capacity. His concern for their welfare is evident, and he occasionally has more direct communication with them during periods when Nambu is unavailable or secluded.

Anderson undergoes significant development and meets a tragic end. In Gatchaman II, he sustains critical injuries during a Galactor attack on the 1st Naval Command, where he was supervising the development of specialized radar technology for the Science Ninja Team. This attack also introduces his grandson, Sam. Anderson ultimately succumbs to these injuries off-screen between the events of Gatchaman II and Gatchaman Fighter. His death has a direct consequence on the leadership structure, as Dr. Nambu becomes the new ISO Director in Gatchaman Fighter. In the OVA series, Anderson retains his role as ISO Director, attending high-level meetings and participating in strategic discussions, though his narrative presence is more minimal in this adaptation.

Notable abilities possessed by Anderson include his scientific knowledge and his hands-on operational capability. His private jet features an ejector seat with a built-in radio for Morse code transmission as well as secure storage compartments, indicating that he is prepared for direct involvement in field operations despite his rank. He personally oversees sensitive projects and understands the technical details of the weapons and technologies being developed to fight Galactor.
