Description
Kamaji is an elderly man who operates the boiler room deep within the bathhouse, a central location in the spirit world. He is a distinctive figure, often described as a spider-like human or yokai, a type of supernatural being from Japanese folklore. His design is inspired by the Tsuchigumo, a mythical creature, which is evident in his physical form: he has six long, extendable arms, a hunched posture, two short legs, and a bushy beard. He typically wears a dark shirt, green pants, red shoes, and a pair of round, black sunglasses that obscure his eyes. The name Kamaji itself reflects his role, as kama means iron pot and ji means old man, marking him as the old man in charge of the facility's furnace.

In terms of personality, Kamaji initially appears harsh and gruff. When Chihiro first enters his boiler room and begs for work, he refuses, telling her to leave. Despite this stern exterior, he is shown to be deeply kind, compassionate, and helpful. He does not stop Chihiro from helping his Soot Sprites with their coal-shoveling work and ultimately decides to assist her. His actions are driven by a sense of practicality and a quiet, paternalistic care for those who are lost or in need. He protects Chihiro from Lin, another bathhouse worker, by falsely claiming the human girl is his granddaughter, ensuring Lin will take her to the witch Yubaba to seek a job contract. This blend of toughness and benevolence defines his character.

Kamaji plays a crucial role as a guide and an ally to the protagonist, Chihiro. His position in the boiler room makes him the first resident of the bathhouse who is not openly hostile to her, offering a small sanctuary and necessary direction. He fulfills several key functions that drive the plot forward. First, he is the one who instructs Lin to escort Chihiro to the top floor of the bathhouse to meet the feared witch Yubaba, setting the next stage of her journey in motion. Second, he demonstrates his deep loyalty and wisdom later in the story when a severely injured Haku, a river spirit and Yubaba's apprentice, is brought to the boiler room. Kamaji immediately agrees to help, covering for Chihiro and Haku, and using his knowledge to identify the rare, magical medicine needed to heal his wounds. Finally, he provides Chihiro with a set of train tickets that he has kept for forty years, enabling her to travel to the distant home of Zeniba, Yubaba's twin sister, to return a stolen golden seal and break a curse.

His key relationships are defined by mentorship and mutual respect. He shares a particularly strong bond with Haku, whom he considers like a grandson and is very protective of. He also has a close working relationship with Lin, who affectionately addresses him as grandpa and trusts his judgment. The Soot Sprites, which he magically creates from coal soot, are his dedicated and hardworking helpers, and he commands them with authority, though without malice.

Regarding his development, Kamaji is a static character who does not undergo a personal transformation. Instead, he acts as a constant, representing steadfastness and the possibility of kindness within a corrupt system. While he is content to remain in his boiler room, his possession of the old train tickets hints that he may have once intended to leave the bathhouse, or that he has been waiting for the right moment to help someone escape.

Kamaji possesses several notable abilities that make him invaluable in his position. His primary physical ability is the power to extend his six arms to great lengths, allowing him to reach high cabinets and perform multiple tasks simultaneously without leaving his central workstation. He has an eidetic memory, knowing the exact location of every herb and medicine in his vast collection of drawers without needing labels. He is also highly knowledgeable about magic and medicinal remedies; he can recognize magical objects and curses, and he knows how to brew the correct potions to treat spiritual ailments. He is also capable of transforming ordinary soot into the sentient, worker Soot Sprites that help him fuel the furnace. Despite his spider-like appearance and abilities, Kamaji has an ironic fear of bugs.
