Description
Bandai Gaeru is a minor character in the animated film Spirited Away. He is a frog-like spirit who works as an employee at the enormous bathhouse run by the witch Yubaba, specifically serving in the role of a foreman or a chef within the bustling establishment. His name reflects his appearance, as "Gaeru" is the Japanese word for frog.

In terms of personality, Bandai Gaeru is portrayed as a diligent but somewhat opportunistic worker. Like many other employees of the bathhouse, he exhibits a notable degree of greed. This trait is most clearly demonstrated when he attempts to sneak back into the large bathtub area late at night, hoping to find any stray gold pieces that might have been left behind following the visit of the wealthy River Spirit. His actions are driven by a desire for personal gain, showing that he is not entirely content with his regular wages and is willing to bend the rules for a chance at fortune.

Bandai Gaeru's primary role in the story is to serve as an early obstacle and later as a victim of the spirit known as No-Face. Early in the film, he is one of the first workers to detect the human girl Chihiro as she attempts to sneak across the bridge leading to the bathhouse. His loud exclamation, "There's a human!", nearly exposes her presence and forces her and her companion Haku to flee. His most significant contribution to the plot, however, occurs later when his greed leads to his downfall. While searching for leftover gold, he encounters No-Face. Enticed by the spirit's offer of a golden coin, he approaches, only to be immediately swallowed whole by No-Face. This act marks the beginning of No-Face's rampage within the bathhouse, as the spirit subsequently adopts Bandai Gaeru's greedy personality and voice to manipulate and consume other workers.

Key relationships for Bandai Gaeru are largely defined by the bathhouse hierarchy. He is a subordinate to Yubaba, the authoritarian owner, and takes orders from higher-ranking managers like Aniyaku. He is a colleague to numerous other frog spirits, workers like Lin, and the boiler-man Kamaji. His most impactful relationship is with No-Face, who consumes him. After being regurgitated by No-Face towards the film's climax, Bandai Gaeru is freed and returns to his normal state, unharmed but presumably changed by the experience. He also has a brief but memorable interaction with Haku, who uses magic to suspend him in mid-air as punishment for raising the alarm about Chihiro.

Bandai Gaeru does not undergo a significant personal development arc; his function is more supportive to the narrative. His primary change is circumstantial, moving from a greedy pursuer of gold to a victim and then back to a normal employee. Regarding notable abilities, he does not possess any magical powers. His most defining characteristic is his physical agility, particularly his ability to jump high and far, which he uses when leaping towards Chihiro on the bridge. His voice and demeanor, however, become an indirect tool for No-Face, who mimics his cadence and avarice to devastating effect within the bathhouse.
