OVA
Description
Fo Fai is a character from the first two installments of the Battle Arena Toshinden series, presented as an elderly yet formidable martial artist of Chinese nationality. Despite his advanced age, which is over one hundred years old, and his frail-looking stature of five feet tall and just over one hundred pounds, he possesses immense power and skill. His weapon of choice is a set of iron claws, which he uses in combat with lethal precision. Outwardly, Fo Fai presents the illusion of a kindly, wandering old magician, a facade that allows him to interact with the world without raising suspicion.
This gentle exterior hides his true nature as a cold-blooded and sadistic assassin. Fo Fai is described as a killer with a heart as black as night, who derives genuine pleasure from the suffering and death of others, particularly young fighters. He participates in the first two Toshindaibukai tournaments, hosted by the secret organization known as Himitsu Kessha, for reasons that are never fully explained. In these tournaments, he serves as an opponent to the younger protagonists, taking delight in the prospect of killing them.
Following the events of the second tournament, Fo Fai's role shifts from a direct combatant to a mentor and successor-builder. He takes a young girl from Hong Kong named Cuiling under his wing, training her in his assassination techniques. Through this training, Cuiling comes to see him as an honorary grandfather, and she develops a deep, granddaughter-like affection for him. Seeking to further his legacy, Fo Fai then ventures into the secluded mountains of China to investigate rumors of a mysterious ape-like creature. There, he finds the humanoid ape Bayhou and, sensing great potential, gifts his iron claws to him. Fo Fai proceeds to train Bayhou in his fighting style, recognizing the creature as a worthy successor.
Fo Fai's story concludes in a deliberate and calculated fashion. After completing Bayhou's training, he decides to administer a final test to see if his student is truly worthy. Fo Fai turns his back to Bayhou and gazes peacefully at the sky, fully aware that his time is ending and that the bloodthirsty nature of the ape would provoke an attack. As he predicted, Bayhou strikes him without warning, slicing a fatal wound across his back. Fo Fai dies with a smile on his face, content in the knowledge that his legacy will be carried on by Cuiling and Bayhou, who will become strong practitioners of his iron claw fighting style. Despite this death, which occurs between the events of the second and third games, Fo Fai's presence lingers. He appears in the intro of the third game as a cameo and is also featured as an unlockable outfit for Bayhou, depicted as an undead zombie with a bloody claw mark on his back, a permanent reminder of his fate and his connection to the character who succeeded him. His role in the storyline is crucial, as he serves as the foundation and the narrative link between two playable characters, ensuring his assassination martial arts continue within the series.
In terms of abilities, Fo Fai is a master of a unique assassination style that blends magic with his iron claw weaponry. His fighting style is directly inherited by both Cuiling and Bayhou, who utilize many of his signature moves and techniques after he passes his claws on to them. His combat approach is swift and brutal, designed to efficiently dispatch his opponents, which aligns perfectly with his hidden, bloodthirsty personality.
