James Carter Cathcart, also known professionally as Jimmy Zoppi and Carter Cathcart, was an American voice actor, script adaptor, voice director, and musician best known for his extensive and long-running work in the Pokémon anime franchise. Born on March 8, 1954, in Michigan City, Indiana, he began his career in entertainment as a musician, playing in bands from high school and performing with the group The Laughing Dogs, which released two albums on Columbia Records. He transitioned into voice acting in the 1980s, with one of his earliest roles being the character Cap'n O. G. Readmore for an ABC Weekend Special anthology series.

Cathcart's most significant and defining body of work was with the Pokémon franchise, which he was a part of for 25 years, from 1998 until his retirement in 2023. He provided the English voices for several of the series' most iconic characters, including the villainous Team Rocket member James, his talking Pokémon partner Meowth, the genial Professor Oak, and his grandson Gary Oak. His portrayal of Meowth was particularly notable, as the character is one of the few Pokémon capable of human speech, requiring a distinct and consistent vocal performance. Over his career, he voiced these characters in more than 700 episodes of the various Pokémon anime series and over 15 Pokémon films. This includes the movies specifically mentioned, such as Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!, Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us, Pokémon the Movie: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, and Pokémon Journeys: The Series. His work on Pokémon also extended beyond acting; for 17 years, he was the sole writer responsible for adapting the Japanese scripts into English.

He voiced the character Baki Hanma and Mitsunari Tokugawa in the 1996 English dub of the anime OVA Grappler Baki: The Ultimate Fighter. His other notable anime roles include Vector the Crocodile in Sonic X, Weevil Underwood in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, and appearances in dubs of One Piece, Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Mission Odyssey. He also lent his voice to the video game Shadow the Hedgehog. In addition to his voice work in animation, he performed voiceovers for commercials for major brands such as Kit Kat, Good Humor, and Coors Light.

James Carter Cathcart retired from voice acting in 2023 following a diagnosis of throat cancer. He passed away on July 8, 2025, at the age of 71. His death was widely noted by colleagues and fans, who remembered him for his talent, kindness, and the enduring impact of his performances on the childhoods of millions around the world.
