OVA
Description
Kōichi Susa is the male protagonist of the three-episode OVA series Guardian of Darkness. He is a seventeen-year-old high school student with distinctive green hair and is regarded as the popular, good-looking darling of his school. Despite his popularity, Kōichi remains unaware of the romantic feelings his childhood friend Terumi Amano holds for him, treating her only as a close friend.

Kōichi’s background is deeply tied to an ancient legend. He is a descendant of Susa, the first human host of the war god Susanoo. Susanoo, a powerful deity from the underworld, had once descended to earth to battle a trio of malevolent dragons that threatened humanity. After Susanoo was banished, he waited for a new host to be reborn. Kōichi is that chosen host in the present generation. When the dragon spirits awaken and begin possessing humans, Susanoo approaches Kōichi and requests permission to inhabit his body so that he can fight the dragons. Kōichi is reluctant at first, but he eventually agrees after witnessing the danger to those around him, especially Terumi, who has become possessed by the Dragon of the Earth in exchange for beauty and popularity.

Kōichi’s primary motivation throughout the story is to protect Terumi and stop the dragons from destroying the world. He struggles with the prophecy that in order to defeat the dragons, the host of Susanoo must die as well. This forces him to seek a way to fulfill his role without sacrificing his own life or Terumi’s soul. He is initially an ordinary, somewhat passive teenager, but as the series progresses he becomes more determined and willing to accept his destiny. His development is marked by his growing resolve to take on the burden of being Susanoo’s vessel and his efforts to find a solution that saves everyone he cares about.

Kōichi’s key relationships include his bond with Terumi Amano, whose possession by a dragon drives much of the conflict. He also forms a connection with the priestess Sayoko Matsuura, a two-hundred-year-old woman bound by karmic debt who explains the prophecy and the war between gods and dragons. His cousin Satsuki plays a supporting role, and he is briefly antagonized by a girl named Motoko, who tries to alienate him from Terumi. His relationship with Susanoo is central: the god speaks through him and grants him supernatural power, but their coexistence is a reluctant partnership that carries a heavy cost.

Kōichi’s notable abilities stem entirely from his role as the host of Susanoo. When Susanoo takes possession, Kōichi gains immense physical strength, combat prowess, and the power to fight the dragon spirits. The transformation grants him the ability to engage in violent confrontations with the dragons, though the toll on his body and soul is severe. He does not possess any innate powers of his own, but his willingness to allow Susanoo to act through him makes him a key figure in the ancient conflict. His greatest strength is his compassion and determination to protect his friend, which drives him to challenge fate itself.
