Description
Mutan is a small, squirrel-like alien character from the 1975 anime series Tekkaman, the Space Knight. He originates from the far-off frozen planet Sanno, the same homeworld as the sardonic, blond-haired alien Andro Umeda, and the two are frequent companions throughout the series. Mutan possesses the ability to teleport, a power shared with Andro, and can also transform into a shadow-like energy form that allows him to move beyond physical limits. In addition to teleportation, Mutan demonstrates several other supernatural talents: he can emit heat rays from his eyes, launch flames from his mouth, and has special healing powers. He also exhibits psychic sensitivity, able to detect malignant presences or hostile intentions in his surroundings.

Mutan’s role in the story is primarily that of a loyal and helpful alien ally to the human protagonists. He joins Joji Minami (the titular Tekkaman), Hiromi Amachi, Professor Souzou Amachi, and Andro in their fight against the Waldaster alien threat. Despite his small, cute appearance, Mutan contributes actively in both combat and support situations, using his abilities to assist the team. His relationship with Andro is especially close, as they share a common origin and often work in tandem. Mutan also forms a bond with the human characters, often showing a playful and curious demeanor that lightens the series’ tone. His motivations appear driven by a desire to protect his new allies and help Earth survive, likely stemming from his own experience as an alien refugee from a devastated world.

Throughout the 26-episode run, Mutan remains a consistent supporting character. While he does not undergo a dramatic personal arc, his presence reinforces the theme of cross-species cooperation. His abilities are occasionally the key to overcoming specific threats, such as detecting hidden enemies or providing healing aid. Notable abilities include his signature teleportation, which allows him to evade attacks and reposition instantly, as well as his offensive flame breath and eye-heat rays. His shadow-energy form enables him to phase through obstacles or become intangible. Overall, Mutan serves as a versatile and endearing member of the Space Knights, embodying the series’ blend of action, comedy, and extraterrestrial camaraderie.
