Description
La Grand-Mère de Diana, known as Towa, is a supporting character in the fourth Pokémon film, Celebi: The Voice of the Forest. She is an elderly woman who has lived in the village of Arborville, located deep within a forest in the Johto region, for more than forty years. Towa is the grandmother of Diana, a teenage girl who lives with her in treehouse homes built high in the canopy.

Towa is deeply connected to the forest that surrounds her home. She possesses a profound knowledge of its ancient legends, most notably the tale of the Voice of the Forest, a mystical presence that watches over the woodland. This Voice is revealed to be the Mythical Pokémon Celebi, a time‑traveling creature that protects nature. Towa's long acquaintance with the forest gives her a calm, wise demeanor, and she acts as a guardian figure for both the land and its Pokémon.

Her chief motivation is to safeguard the forest and the legendary Pokémon that dwells within it. When a young trainer named Sammy—later revealed to be a young Professor Oak—arrives from the past after protecting an injured Celebi, Towa recognizes the importance of the moment. She warns Ash Ketchum and his friends about the dangers of venturing too deep into the woods, yet she also guides them when they need help. Her actions are driven by a sense of duty to preserve the natural balance and to protect Celebi from those who would misuse its power, particularly the Iron Masked Marauder, a villainous member of Team Rocket who seeks to enslave the time‑traveling Pokémon.

Towa plays a key role in the climax of the story. When Ash, Misty, Brock, and Sammy become entangled in the conflict, Towa, her granddaughter Diana, and a local man named Mr. White take to the skies in a dirigible to aid the group. Despite the aircraft being damaged, Towa remains resolute. At the film’s conclusion, she stands alongside Diana and the other villagers to confront the defeated Marauder, asserting the protective power of the forest community.

Her most important relationship is with her granddaughter Diana. The two share a close bond, and Diana has inherited Towa’s knowledge of the forest legends. In appearance, Diana strongly resembles a younger Towa, emphasizing the theme of generational continuity. Towa also has a significant, though indirect, connection to Sammy. Forty years before the events of the film, Towa encountered Sammy in the same forest when he first met Celebi, and she warned him of the forest’s voice. This encounter is what she recounts when she sees Sammy again in the present, linking past and present.

Towa does not display any overt superhuman abilities. Her strength lies in her wisdom, her intimate understanding of the forest’s ecosystems and legends, and her unwavering courage. She is able to rally others and inspire them to act for the greater good. Throughout the story, Towa remains a steady, protective presence, embodying the quiet strength of someone who has lived in harmony with nature for decades. Her character underscores the themes of timeless friendship and the enduring bond between people and the environment.
