Movie
Description
The adversary at the beginning of the film is a character known as the Iron-Masked Marauder, whose Japanese name is Vicious. He is an elite officer of Team Rocket and serves as the main antagonist of the story. His background is that of a high-ranking member of the criminal organization, though his ambition far exceeds his current station. He is introduced when he confronts an elderly Pokémon hunter who had encountered Celebi decades earlier, using intimidation and a special Poké Ball called a Dark Ball to force information from the man.
In terms of personality, the Iron-Masked Marauder is depicted as cruel, cold, and utterly ruthless. He shows no remorse for his actions, taking sadistic pleasure in dominating others and corrupting Pokémon. He is highly egocentric, believing that his power and schemes entitle him to rule over both Team Rocket and the entire world. His motivations are driven by a desire for ultimate control: he seeks to capture the mythical Pokémon Celebi and use its immense time-travel and nature powers to overthrow Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket, and then conquer the world. He has no loyalty to the organization beyond what serves his own ends.
Within the story, the Iron-Masked Marauder functions as the primary obstacle for Ash, his friends, and the young boy Sammy. After learning about Celebi from the hunter, he relentlessly pursues the Pokémon, eventually capturing it with a Dark Ball. He then forces the corrupted Celebi to construct a massive wooden armor and devastate the forest. His role escalates when he reveals his betrayal of Team Rocket to the captured Jessie, using her as a witness to his power. He attempts to destroy all who oppose him, including Ash and the forest Pokémon, and later tries to capture the legendary Suicune as well.
Key relationships include his brief alliance with Jessie, James, and Meowth, whom he uses as subordinates but discards when they become inconvenient. He shows no genuine connection to them. His primary opposition comes from Ash Ketchum, Sammy, and the forest Pokémon, particularly Suicune, who ultimately helps free Celebi from his control. The Iron-Masked Marauder also commands a small team of Pokémon acquired through Dark Balls: a Sneasel, a Scizor, and a Tyranitar that originally belonged to the old hunter. These Pokémon are turned evil and empowered by the Dark Balls, but they break free when Celebi is liberated.
The character undergoes minimal development; he remains single-mindedly villainous throughout the film. His downfall occurs when Ash and Sammy break the Dark Ball controlling Celebi, causing the massive armor to collapse and the Marauder to fall into the Lake of Life. He reappears shortly after to attempt a final kidnapping of Celebi using a jetpack, but Ash and Pikachu disable it, sending him crashing into the forest. Stripped of his Pokémon and his mask, he is surrounded by the angry wild Pokémon and local people, begging for mercy before being captured. His defeat marks the end of his threat.
Notable abilities include his use of Dark Balls, which can capture any Pokémon—even those already owned by other trainers—and instantly corrupt them, raising their power to the maximum. He also employs a spider-like mecha vehicle for traversal and capture, and later a jetpack for a last aerial attempt. His own combat skills are minimal, relying entirely on his corrupted Pokémon and machinery. The Iron-Masked Marauder stands as one of the more purely evil antagonists in the Pokémon film series, with no redeeming qualities or sympathetic backstory.
