Description
Dr. Daichi Ōnishi, also known in English-language materials as Doctor Kenneth Onishi, is a human character from the Transformers: Robots in Disguise anime. He is an archaeologist who is also established as the world's leading expert on energy applications and resources. This unique combination of skills makes him a figure of great interest to both the Autobots and the Predacons. He is the father of Koji Onishi, the young boy who becomes closely allied with the Autobots, and he has a wife who is very rarely seen or mentioned throughout the series.

In terms of personality, Doctor Onishi is portrayed as a dedicated and brilliant scientist whose passion for his work is matched by a more personal enthusiasm for vintage trains. This fondness for trains is a recurring and notable character trait, serving not only as a hobby but also as a source of mental strength during difficult times. He is a caring father, and although much of the series sees him separated from his son, the bond between them is a central element of his character and motivation. He demonstrates significant resilience and cleverness, using his own interests to protect his mind from interrogation.

Doctor Onishi's primary role in the story is set in motion when he is abducted by the Predacon leader, Megatron. This occurs during an International Energy Symposium in New York, which Megatron attacks, rendering everyone unconscious and taking the doctor captive. The Predacons seek to exploit his vast knowledge of Earth's energy sources and, more specifically, to locate the legendary, dormant Cybertronian battle station known as Fortress Maximus, which is hidden beneath Metro City. While imprisoned, the Predacons subject him to a psycho-probe, a device designed to forcibly extract information from his mind. However, Onishi thwarts a complete extraction of secrets by mentally retreating to his harmless memories of vintage trains, a tactic that confounds his interrogators and gives him hope for rescue.

The information gleaned from his mind, along with a hidden microchip he left behind, provides the Predacons and the Autobots with crucial clues. The Autobots, having allied with his son Koji, use these clues to locate ancient ruins, a crashed Cybertronian spaceship, and the O-Parts, which are key components needed to find and activate Fortress Maximus. His rescue is eventually orchestrated by the Predacon Sky-Byte, who, in a bid for a personal advantage, removes the doctor from the Decepticon base and delivers him to Koji during a battle with the Autobots. This reunion is a pivotal moment, after which Doctor Onishi actively joins the Autobots' cause.

Following his rescue, Doctor Onishi works directly with the Autobots and their artificial intelligence computer, T-AI. His expertise becomes vital in decoding the information from his microchip and understanding the function of the O-Parts, which leads the team to the Orb of Sigma and Cerebros, the components necessary to operate Fortress Maximus. He is instrumental in attempting to develop a control program for the massive robot. A key breakthrough occurs when his son, Koji, is able to command Fortress Maximus to stop its destructive rampage through Metro City, demonstrating a link between the giant robot and pure human intentions. Later, when the evil Transformer Scourge attempts to control Maximus by magnifying his own human bio-signature, Doctor Onishi devises a countermeasure. He contacts T-AI to have Autobot teams bring a group of human children to the desert battlefield. The combined, collective humanity of the children is able to override Scourge's control, showcasing Doctor Onishi's strategic thinking and his understanding of both human and Cybertronian elements. Throughout these events, he expresses pride in his son's bravery and willingness to help his friends.

Beyond his immediate contributions to the main conflict, Doctor Onishi is also noted for his broader scientific achievements. His distinct appearance includes spiky black and gray hair, a thin mustache, and a lab coat often worn over formal attire. While the English dub of the series does not give him a first name, referring to him only as "Doctor Onishi," the name Kenneth comes from official episode summaries, and his original Japanese name is Daichi Ōnishi. His abilities lie not in physical combat, but in his profound knowledge of archaeology, energy systems, and Cybertronian technology, making him one of the most valuable human allies in the Autobots' fight against the Predacons.
