Description
Desler, also known as Leader Desler, is the charismatic and complex ruler of the Gamilas Empire and a central antagonist in the story of Star Blazers: The Comet Empire. His physical appearance is distinctive among his race, resembling a man with golden hair, black eyes, and blue skin. He is almost always seen in a formal grey military uniform adorned with a red-and-black cape, white gloves, and polished boots, projecting an image of absolute authority and flamboyant elegance.
Desler's background is that of a leader facing an impossible crisis. His homeworld of Gamilas is a dying planet, and his initial invasion of Earth was not born simply from conquest but from the desperate necessity of finding a new home for his people. This foundational motivation shapes his entire character. He is a skilled military tactician with a sharp, calculating mind and a low tolerance for failure among his subordinates. While he can be arrogant, cultured, and even nihilistic, his actions are consistently driven by a fierce loyalty to his empire and its survival.
In the events of The Comet Empire, Desler has survived his previous defeat at the hands of the spaceship Yamato. Rescued and revived by the advanced medicine of the White Comet Empire, he is given a new flagship and a chance to exact his revenge. At this stage, his negative traits become dominant, as he is consumed by humiliation and rage. He allies himself with Emperor Zwordar, agreeing to help destroy the Yamato in exchange for the power to rebuild his own civilization. His role is that of a formidable, independent agent within the larger enemy force, a wild card whose personal vendetta often drives the conflict with the Earth ship more than the Empire's own goals.
Throughout this arc, Desler's key relationships are complex. He has a deep, unwavering bond with his closest friend and loyal subordinate, Talan, who is often the only other surviving Gamilas by his side. His most significant dynamic, however, is with the crew of the Yamato, particularly with Susumu Kodai and Yuki Mori. Initially, they are objects of his pure hatred. However, a pivotal turning point occurs during a final, desperate confrontation. When Desler has Kodai at his mercy, Yuki Mori rushes to protect the injured officer. Witnessing this open, selfless act of love and sacrifice triggers a profound change in Desler. He recognizes in the humans the same love and devotion he feels for his own people. This moment forces him to see that his quest for vengeance has made him no better than the Comet Empire, whose sole purpose is conquest and plunder. He renounces his feud with Earth, and before departing, reveals a critical weakness in the White Comet Empire's main fortress, allowing the Yamato a chance at victory.
Desler's development in The Comet Empire is therefore a complete arc: he transforms from a pragmatic, if ruthless, leader into a vengeful antagonist, and finally into a redeemed anti-hero. He is not a one-dimensional villain. His pride as a warrior, his ability to respect a worthy opponent, and his capacity for love ultimately redeem him. In terms of abilities, Desler is most renowned for his tactical genius, often springing elaborate traps on his enemies. He also commands powerful warships equipped with his signature weapon, the Dessler Cannon, a devastating energy beam that is among the most powerful in the galaxy.
