Description
Kenichi Gō is the eldest son of scientists Kentaro and Mitsuyo Gō and serves as the leader of the Voltes team. He is the primary pilot of the Volt Cruiser, which forms the head of the super electromagnetic machine Voltes V. Born on June 22, his childhood was marked by an adventurous and playful nature, but the sudden disappearance of his father forced him to take on great responsibility at a young age. He became the primary caretaker for his younger brothers, Daijiro and Hiyoshi, shaping him into a serious, selfless individual with a strong sense of duty. He is physically tall with a slightly muscular build, dark brown hair styled with sideburns, and green eyes. His signature attire is a red-and-white pilot jumpsuit with a prominent yellow V emblem on the torso, while his casual wear consists of a green denim blazer over a light-yellow shirt.

As a leader, Kenichi is dedicated to following rules and defending Earth, sometimes clashing with teammates who do not share his disciplined approach. He adheres to a strict no-killing policy, especially when driven by revenge, as he believes it prevents his team from mirroring the cruelty of their enemies and sets a moral example. While generally optimistic and confident, he can display moments of naivety, such as eagerly trusting a forged letter about his father that turned out to be an enemy trap. He is also self-sacrificing to a fault, having once taken a hit meant for an enemy soldier because he viewed attacking a defenseless person as immoral, an act that later earned him crucial information.

Kenichi possesses a wide array of skills that make him an exceptional pilot and fighter. He is a highly skilled ace pilot capable of operating all Volt Machines with great mechanical understanding. His physical abilities include championship-level motocross riding, exceptional marksmanship, and formidable hand-to-hand combat skills. Notably, he demonstrates surprising swordsmanship, enabling him to duel effectively against seasoned opponents like Prince Heinel. Beyond combat, he has significant engineering aptitude, showcased when he modified the wrecked prototype Voltman into the functional Black Voltman.

His relationships with his teammates and family define much of his journey. He acts as a protective father figure to his brothers, though this can lead to friction, particularly with Daijiro when their desire to rescue their captive father conflicts with mission priorities. His relationship with fellow pilot Ippei Mine starts with significant conflict due to their opposing temperaments, with Ippei mocking the family's grief after their mother's death leading to physical confrontations. However, shared battles and reconciliations allow their dynamic to evolve into mutual respect. His relationship with the antagonist Prince Heinel is the most complex; they begin as sworn enemies but are eventually revealed to be half-brothers, sharing the same father, Kentaro. This revelation leads Heinel to sacrifice himself to save Kenichi, leaving Kenichi to mourn the brother he never knew.

Throughout the story, Kenichi endures repeated personal losses that shape his character development. His mother, Mitsuyo Gō, dies in a suicide attack to free Voltes V from an enemy beast fighter, which triggers a temporary berserker rage within him. A pivotal moment in his development is the revelation of his half-Boazanian heritage, which forces him to reconcile his identity with his commitment to Earth's defense. His leadership evolves from rigid duty toward greater compassion, influenced by learning of his father's past as a Boazanian freedom fighter. The narrative culminates in his role liberating the planet Boazania from its oppressive caste system, with implications that he might assume its throne. In international adaptations, the character is renamed Steve Armstrong in Philippine English dubs.
