Description
Joe Shimamura, designated Cyborg 009, is a fictional character with a complex origin story that varies across different adaptations of the source material. He is consistently portrayed as a young man of Japanese heritage, specifically half-Japanese. In many versions, including the 2001 anime, his early life is marked by tragedy. After his father disappeared and his mother died shortly after his birth, he was taken in as an orphan by a Catholic priest in Kanazawa. He grew up as a troubled delinquent youth who was shunned by his peers, eventually escaping from a juvenile detention facility. This version of his backstory culminates with his mentor, the priest, being killed by the terrorist organization Black Ghost, who then framed Joe for the crime. Joe was captured and subsequently transformed into a cyborg. In earlier film versions from the 1960s and 1980s, his origin differs; he was a famous racer nicknamed Hurricane Joe who was recovered by Black Ghost after a near-fatal crash.
Joe possesses a personality defined by a strong sense of justice, a kind heart, and a cool-headed demeanor. Despite his difficult past and the dehumanizing process of becoming a cyborg, he maintains a deep and unwavering faith in humanity. This conviction gives him the strength to stand against any opponent, regardless of how powerful they may be, as he looks down upon those who view humanity as a weakness. His primary motivation is to prevent any further catastrophes from befalling humanity, a mission that pits him and his fellow cyborgs in an eternal battle against their former masters, Black Ghost.
Within the team of 00 Cyborgs, Joe serves as the field leader and is often considered the most advanced of the nine. He forms a significant romantic relationship with his teammate, Françoise Arnoul, who is known as Cyborg 003. This relationship is a recurring element across the series, portrayed more explicitly in the original manga and earlier anime, while being more implied in later versions like the 2001 series. As a character, Joe struggles with his identity as a cyborg and the loss of his memories following his transformation. His development involves him learning to accept his new form and finding a new family and purpose with the other cyborgs who, like him, escaped Black Ghost's control.
As the prototype for a production model cyborg soldier, Joe Shimamura was equipped with a formidable array of cybernetic enhancements. His most notable ability is the Accelerator, a device housed in a switch embedded in one of his back molars. Activating this switch allows him to move at incredible supersonic speeds, often described as reaching up to Mach 5, though he has demonstrated the ability to go much faster, even approaching the speed of light. However, this power comes with a critical limitation: when moving at such extreme velocities, air friction becomes lethal. He cannot touch or carry any living creature, as the resulting friction would seriously injure or kill them.
In addition to his signature speed, Joe possesses other abilities derived from his teammates. He has cybernetic superhuman strength, granted by muscle and bone enhancements similar to those of Cyborg 005, allowing him to deliver punches with the kinetic force of a machine gun bullet. He also has enhanced senses, including night vision, super hearing, and the ability to sense electromagnetic waves, comparable to Cyborg 003. Furthermore, he is equipped with an internal respirator that allows him to breathe underwater and filter out poison gases for up to an hour, similar to Cyborg 008. In some storylines, his abilities are expanded to include latent psychic powers like teleportation. Physically, he is recognized by his flowing, spiked hair, with a large lock that characteristically covers one of his eyes.
