Description
Kikue Shiba is the mother of the protagonist, Hiroshi Shiba, and the widow of the brilliant scientist Professor Shiba. As the matriarch of the family, she is the head of the household, having assumed this responsibility after her husband's untimely death. She lives with her son Hiroshi, her young daughter Mayumi, and an orphaned boy named Shorty whom the family has taken in. Her role is primarily that of a supportive and concerned parent, providing an emotional anchor for her son as he faces an extraordinary destiny.
Kikue is characterized by her deep, maternal concern for her family, which becomes increasingly focused on Hiroshi's dangerous missions. As a housewife, she is frequently shown managing the home, but her defining trait is her constant worry whenever Hiroshi transforms into the super robot Steel Jeeg to battle the forces of the Jamatai Empire. This anxiety stems from the natural fear of a mother for her child's safety, amplified by the immense peril he faces regularly. She often appears as the emotional heart of the Shiba home, representing the normal, peaceful life that Hiroshi is fighting to protect.
Throughout the series, Kikue's primary motivation is the safety and well-being of her children. Following the death of her husband, she becomes the family's stabilizing force. Her deep concern is not passive; on one occasion, when Hiroshi becomes emotionally distant and indifferent to his family and friends, she tries to intervene, seeking help from her late husband's computerized consciousness to reach her son. She is also depicted grappling with the financial strain left by her husband's death. In one episode, Hiroshi and Shorty discover that she has secretly taken a job as a cook to make ends meet, which becomes a source of worry for her son, demonstrating her quiet, self-sacrificing nature.
Kikue's most significant relationship is, of course, with her son Hiroshi. The dynamic is that of a caring mother trying to guide a strong-willed and often reckless son. Her most crucial relationship is with the legacy of her late husband. She is aware of many of the secrets surrounding Hiroshi's abilities, particularly the truth that the ancient Jamatai Bell was implanted in his chest as a child, granting him his invulnerability. While she has knowledge of this, she respects her husband's judgment and initially hesitates to reveal the full truth to Hiroshi, believing he may not be ready. In a pivotal moment, when Hiroshi is gravely wounded and survives an otherwise fatal arrow to the heart, she is on the verge of revealing the secret herself, understanding that he is beginning to realize the source of his power. Her encouragement in this moment, urging him to find new resolve, helps him accept his duty and his identity.
While Kikue does not pilot a mecha or engage in combat, her notable abilities are of a different kind. Her strength lies in her emotional resilience and her role as a keeper of family secrets. She possesses intimate knowledge of the circumstances that made her son a cyborg and the location of the Bronze Bell, a key to vast power that the Jamatai Empire seeks. Her courage is shown in her daily life: managing a family touched by tragedy and financial hardship, and silently bearing the burden of knowing the truth about her son's body while watching him risk his life. She is a representation of the personal stakes in Hiroshi's war, grounding the science fiction narrative in relatable, human drama.
