Description
Guard Wing is a significant supporting character in the anime The Brave Fighter of Sun Fighbird, serving as the fourth and final member of the Guard Team, a subsidiary group of the Space Police Force. He distinguishes himself from his comrades through a distinctively arrogant and cocky personality, often believing himself to be superior to others and fully capable of defeating the primary antagonist, Draias, on his own. This overconfidence is a core part of his character. His reason for joining the Space Police Force is notably simple and self-assured: he thought it was cool.
In terms of his background and role, Guard Wing is introduced later than the other Guard Team members, joining the fight on Earth during a critical moment when Draias launched an invasion of America. The Space Police Force was overwhelmed, and Draias proved too powerful even for Armed Fighbird, leading to a call for backup that Guard Wing answered. He arrives in the nick of time, using his firepower to destroy Draias's Teshitas robotic foot soldiers and free the captured Space Police Force, ultimately helping to drive Draias away. His arrival also provides a significant power-up for the team, as he can combine with the other three Guard Team members—Guard Star, Guard Fire, and Guard Rescue—to form the more powerful Super Guardion, for which Guard Wing acts as the main controller.
Personality-wise, Guard Wing is a classic example of a character who is good but not necessarily nice. He is frequently described as a jerkass, and his arrogance and abrasive behavior often clash with his teammates, particularly the hot-headed Guard Fire, leading to arguments that sometimes require intervention from the more level-headed Guard Star. This attitude even leads the human character Kenta to wonder how the other Space Police officers can be friends with him. However, despite his difficult personality, he is sincerely loyal to the Space Police's mission of protecting Earth and hates cruelty and abuse. In one instance, when an enemy named Shura beat up Fighbird's human host Yutaro Katori while holding Kenta hostage, Guard Wing became so enraged that he broke free of restraining bonds to intervene. He also has moments that show a softer side, such as deflecting praise to Professor Hiroshi Amano for a successful plan.
Guard Wing's motivations are tied to his pride and his role as a hero. His primary drive is to prove his strength, which often leads him to act impulsively and ignore the strategic advice of his commanding officer, Katori, or Guard Star. He tends to rush into battle on his own, only to be easily defeated when he confronts Draias directly, though he never admits defeat and instead asks his comrades what took them so long. This recurring pattern of overestimating his abilities and underestimating his enemies is a key source of character conflict. Despite this, he is considered the youngest of the Space Police Force, and some of his arrogance is attributed to his adolescent immaturity.
In terms of notable abilities, Guard Wing transforms into a jet-helicopter, giving him aerial superiority and high-speed mobility. His primary weapons include the Wing Shooter, a handheld machine gun that also serves as his tail binder in vehicle mode, and the Wing Detonator, beam guns mounted on the tips of his wings that can fire in single bursts or rapid succession. He can also generate a powerful gust of wind from his propeller turbines, an attack known as the Wing Hurricane. When combined with the rest of the Guard Team to form Super Guardion, these abilities are enhanced into even more powerful attacks like the Freezing Tornado, and the combined robot gains access to a powerful finishing beam called the Guard Flash.
After the final defeat of Draias, the entire Space Police Force decided to live on Earth in human forms. In this new life, Guard Wing adopted the human name Tsubasa Sarutobi. His name, Tsubasa, fittingly means "wing" in Japanese.
