Description
Chitose Fujinomiya is a central character in the anime Kingyo Chūihō! and is a student at a rural junior high school. She is a tall, uptight girl with long blonde hair that is typically held back with a hairband, and she is often addressed by the nickname Chi-chan.
Chitose originally comes from a life of extreme wealth and privilege as a member of the Fujinomiya family. However, her circumstances change dramatically, leading her to become an orphan who is then expelled from her super-elite school, Tokai no Gakuen, and subsequently shunned by her former friends. Forced to transfer, she ends up at a very unconventional public institution, Inaka no Chūgakkō, a school where needy students and even farm animals are enrolled as pupils. Her only remaining valuable possession from her past is a special pink goldfish named Gyopi, who was a gift from her beloved father.
Chitose's personality is defined by her deep-seated arrogance and her strict, formal upbringing. She is extremely worried about her reputation and is determined to prevent her new school from being seen as inferior to her former one. This pride is so ingrained that it overrides her common sense; for instance, she is unable to escape a burning building because she believes that, as a high-class lady, she is not as robust and resilient as the rugged country students who have already gotten themselves to safety.
Her primary motivation is to reclaim the status she has lost. Upon discovering that her family's attorney had been hiding her inheritance for himself, she uses her recovered wealth to buy the rural school outright, renaming it Shin-Inaka no Chugakko and installing herself as its president. From this position of authority, she attempts to transform the chaotic institution into a refined academy that can compete with her old school. She frequently tries to ban the school's normal, rowdy customs in favor of more proper activities, such as establishing a Tea Ceremony Club. However, her plans are consistently unsuccessful and often backfire in humorous ways.
In the story, Chitose acts as a foil to the school's eccentric and free-spirited student body. Her primary relationship is with a girl named Wapiko, a happy-go-lucky student with superhuman speed whose antics are a chief source of anguish for the uptight Chitose. Despite her frustration with Wapiko, she is deeply connected to her goldfish, Gyopi. Another significant figure is Tanakayama, the former Fujinomiya family attorney who schemed to steal her inheritance and continues to act as a henchman for her rivals. Her antagonists include Yurika Sugadaira, the arrogant president of her former elite school, and her ex-boyfriend Asaba, who despised poor people but tries to win her back once he learns she is rich again. Her mother also makes periodic visits, often bringing souvenirs but inevitably causing further trouble for Chitose.
Throughout the series, Chitose shows little true character development in terms of her personality; she remains largely arrogant and committed to her failed attempts at imposing high-class order on the school. While her plans to change the school never succeed, her role as president ensures she remains a central figure in the school's chaotic daily life. Her most notable asset is her possession of Gyopi, a talking pink goldfish of immense monetary value that is capable of flying through the sky.
