Description
Eriol Hiiragizawa is a character who first appears in the second half of the original Cardcaptor Sakura series, enrolling as a transfer student from England. He is a polite and remarkably gifted boy who excels in academics and sports, and he quickly befriends the protagonist, Sakura Kinomoto. On the surface, he presents a calm, well-mannered, and gentle demeanor, often seen wearing glasses and a cheerful smile. However, he also possesses a mischievous side, frequently participating in elaborate tall tales spun by his classmate Takashi Yamazaki. Despite his friendly appearance, those sensitive to magic, like Syaoran Li, immediately sense a powerful and unsettling aura from him.
In truth, Eriol is not an ordinary boy. His real identity is the reincarnation of the immensely powerful sorcerer Clow Reed, having inherited all of Clow's memories and magical power. He is considered one of the strongest magicians in the world. His primary motivation throughout the series is to help Sakura grow into a true master of the cards. He understands that the Clow Cards, which were created by Clow Reed, would eventually lose their power if they were not converted to use Sakura's own star-based magic. To force Sakura to develop her powers and transform the cards into her own "Sakura Cards," he deliberately creates a series of magical incidents and trials for her to overcome, playing the role of an antagonist for her benefit. He is supported in this task by his own two guardians, Ruby Moon (who takes the human form of Nakuru Akizuki) and Spinel Sun.
While he acts as a mysterious figure testing Sakura, Eriol cares for her deeply, and his weakness is causing her sadness. His relationship with others is complex. He is friends with Sakura, though Syaoran remains suspicious and jealous of him. A surprising aspect of his character is his romantic relationship with Kaho Mizuki, a former teacher of Sakura's brother, who is significantly older than his physical form. In the theatrical version specifically, Eriol plays a crucial role from afar. After returning to England, his former home in Tomoeda is demolished, releasing a powerful, sealed Clow Card known as "Nothing." During this crisis, he uses a special phone to contact and warn Sakura, guiding her on how to resolve the new threat without physically intervening.
Eriol's development sees him achieve his goal of no longer being the world's most powerful magician. By the end of the original series, with Sakura's help, he successfully transfers half of his immense magical power to her father, Fujitaka Kinomoto, who is also a reincarnation of Clow Reed in the manga. This allows him to live a more ordinary life. His notable abilities are vast, including powerful magic that allows him to perform feats such as stopping time over an entire city, erasing memories, and creating his own magical guardians. He also possesses the ability to foresee future events, though he cannot always predict the specific choices of people's hearts.
