Description
Nijūemon Tsuzureya is the father of the protagonist Nijūichiemon, commonly called Emon, and the twentieth-generation proprietor of the Tsuzureya inn, a small, old-fashioned hotel in futuristic Tokyo that has been in the family since the Edo period. He is a hardworking and principled man who takes great pride in the inn's long history despite its declining patronage and rundown condition. His primary motivation is to keep the family business afloat and to see his son eventually inherit it, which puts him in frequent conflict with Emon's dream of becoming a space pilot. He often scolds Emon for neglecting his duties and spending time on space adventures, yet he shows genuine concern for his son's safety and well-being. Nijūemon is portrayed as honest and morally upright, refusing bribes from shady business figures and returning extremely valuable items when he considers them improperly given. He has a close but occasionally tense relationship with his wife, who is called Mama, and together they manage the inn with the help of the robot staff Gonsuke and Onabe. His role in the story is primarily as a parental obstacle to Emon's ambitions, grounding the narrative in family duty and the contrast between tradition and the allure of space. He does not undergo significant character development, remaining a steady figure who represents the responsibilities that Emon must eventually face. In the film Nijūichiemon: Sora Ike! Hadashi no Princess, his appearances are limited to the beginning, where he and Mama are seen briefly, and he does not participate in the central adventure. He has no notable supernatural or special abilities; his strengths lie in his practicality, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the Tsuzureya inn.
