Description
Lulu Arges is the main heroine of the anime Gaiking: Legend of Daikū-maryū. She is a thirteen-year-old girl who serves as a key crew member aboard the giant battleship Daikū Maryū, initially working as a navigator and operator with the crew number seven. She is responsible for guiding the formation of the super robot Gaiking, handling battle navigation, and operating radar. Her most distinctive ability is a special sensitivity that allows her to perceive the hidden power of flames within people and objects.
Lulu Arges has a complex and tragic background. She is the daughter of Captain Garis, a native of the world of Darius, and Eltorica Arges, an Earth woman. Because of this mixed heritage, she is regarded as a particularly contemptible existence by the antagonist Proist, who despises Earth people. As a young child, she witnessed Proist shoot and kill her mother Eltorica. This traumatic event caused her to develop memory impairments that blocked her recollection of the incident. Out of deep regret and a desire to protect her, Captain Garis concealed the truth that he was her father and instead chose to watch over her from a distance, interacting with her as a subordinate rather than as a parent.
In terms of personality, Lulu Arges is calm, composed, and perceptive, often carrying herself with a maturity that makes her seem older than her actual age, even though she is the same age as the protagonist, Daiya Tsuwabuki. While she tends to act in a collected and reliable manner in her duties, she displays the more awkward and hesitant traits of an adolescent girl when interacting with Daiya, revealing a shy and flustered side. She is also strongly loyal and devoted to the crew, particularly to Captain Garis, whom she admires deeply without knowing his true relation to her.
Her role in the story evolves significantly over the course of the series. In the early stages, she functions as a navigator and Daiya's partner, guiding him as he becomes the pilot of Gaiking. As the plot progresses, she becomes a central figure in the conflict with Darius. During the struggle over the Sky Dragon, she is captured by Proist, who forcibly reopens her traumatic memories, causing her to nearly lose her sanity. She is saved by Garis, who shields her at his own risk, allowing her to recover her composure and accept the truth of her past. After Captain Garis departs from the Daikū Maryū, Lulu Arges inherits the position of captain, officially becoming the second captain of the vessel and taking on direct leadership responsibilities.
Key relationships in her life include her bond with Daiya Tsuwabuki, with whom she shares the same age and a deep mutual trust, and with Captain Garis, whose concealed paternal care drives much of her emotional development. Later in the series, another character named Dick begins to pursue her earnestly, and she gradually develops feelings toward him. When Dick is believed to have died, she experiences profound shock and grief, though by the final episode he is revealed to be alive, leaving the resolution of their relationship ambiguous.
Over the course of her development, Lulu Arges changes both emotionally and physically. She emerges from the shadows of her suppressed trauma and assumes a commanding role with confidence. When she becomes captain, she cuts her long black hair, which had been a trademark of her appearance, as a symbolic gesture. Five years after the final battle against Proist, she has grown into a more mature young woman. Her hair has regrown, and markings indicative of her Darius bloodline have become visible on her face. She sets out on a new journey alongside Daiya as the captain of the Daikū Maryū, embracing an adventurous future.
Her notable abilities include her flame-sensing power, which makes her an effective navigator and allows her to detect hidden energies. She is also skilled in communication, coordination, and tactical awareness aboard the battleship. After becoming captain, she demonstrates leadership capability and composure in high-stakes situations. Additionally, she develops a hobby of fortune-telling, which becomes a recurring casual activity.
