Description
Li Jianxing, also known by the Chinese reading of his name as Li Jianxing or simply as Lee, is a key supporting character in the anime Gaiking: Legend of Daikū-maryū. He is a young man from the People's Republic of China, eighteen years old, and is assigned crew number 14 aboard the giant transforming battleship Daikū-maryū. He is physically distinguished by his long black hair, which he wears tied back at the nape of his neck, giving him a disciplined and martial appearance.
Li Jianxing came to the Daikū-maryū with a background in martial arts, specifically kenpo, and possessed exceptional combat and piloting skills. Before the series main protagonist, Daiya Tsuwabuki, took the controls of Gaiking, Lee was the original designated pilot of the super robot. He held this role until a harrowing encounter with a particularly powerful Demon Beast left him deeply traumatized. The experience was severe enough that he voluntarily stepped down from being Gaikings pilot, a decision that shaped much of his early character arc. Rather than bitterness or resentment, this retreat from the cockpit fostered a sense of responsibility and a desire to ensure that Daiya was properly trained and prepared for the dangers ahead.
In terms of personality, Li Jianxing is calm, disciplined, and reliable. He carries himself with the composure of a seasoned warrior and often serves as a voice of reason and experience among the younger and more impulsive crew members. While he does not seek the spotlight, he is fiercely loyal to the crew and the mission of stopping the Darius Empire. His prior trauma does not define him; instead, it has made him more cautious and deliberate in his approach to combat, valuing strategy and skill over raw aggression.
His primary motivation is to protect his comrades and to fight effectively without repeating the mistakes that led to his earlier failure. He is driven by a quiet sense of duty and a personal commitment to overcome his own fears. This inner struggle is a subtle but persistent thread in his character development.
In the story, Li Jianxing acts as both a mentor and a peer to Daiya. He trains Daiya in kenpo techniques and advises him on piloting matters, including the use of the powerful Shinryu Hydro Blazer attack. Despite no longer being the main pilot, he remains an integral combatant. In a significant turn of events during the latter part of the series, Li Jianxing steps into the role of pilot once again, but this time for the formidable machine known as Valming. He leads a boarding party that captures Valming from the Darius forces and later becomes its official pilot, using its immense firepower and strength to support Gaiking in battle. This return to active piloting marks a major milestone in his personal development, showing that he has overcome the trauma that once sidelined him.
His key relationships include a strong bond of mutual respect with Daiya, whom he treats as a student and friend. He also works closely with the engineer and strategist Daimon, with whom he coordinates boarding actions and tactical operations. Within the larger crew of the Daikū-maryū, Lee is a stabilizing presence, respected for his skill and his calm under pressure.
His notable abilities extend beyond piloting. He is a highly proficient hand-to-hand combatant, capable of holding his own in physical confrontations. As the pilot of Valming, a heavy assault machine equipped with powerful drills and armor, he brings a different combat dynamic to the team, complementing Gaikings versatility with raw power and durability. His martial arts training also informs his piloting style, which is precise and controlled.
Throughout the series, Li Jianxing develops from a haunted former pilot into a confident and essential warrior. He reclaims his place on the front lines, not by returning to Gaiking, but by mastering a machine suited to his strengths, symbolizing his growth and his ability to move past his deepest fears.
