TV-Series
Description
Hotaru Ichijo is a fifth-grade student who moves to Asahigaoka village from Tokyo after her father's job transfer. She had previously visited the area due to nearby relatives. Standing 161 centimeters tall, she is the tallest girl at Asahigaoka Branch School, possessing a developed physique atypical for her age. This often leads others to mistake her for an older student or adult, contrasting sharply with her actual age of 10-11 years.

Her personality presents a dual nature. Externally, she maintains calmness and composure, projecting a mature, responsible "older sister" image that invites others to rely on her. Internally, she harbors a more juvenile side, prone to sudden, intense reactions and freaking out easily, especially when her private interests are exposed. Around her mother at home, she displays overtly childish behavior, sometimes misinterpreted as modesty. She holds a profound, near-obsessive admiration for Komari Koshigaya, a second-year middle school student, consistently referring to her as "Senpai" or "Koma-chan Senpai." This fuels her creation of numerous handmade plush dolls resembling Komari, filling an entire room; she also crafts plushies of friends like Renge, Natsumi, and Suguru. She works hard to conceal this hobby, though hints surface in dialogue, like wanting to "pet that little head" regarding Komari.

Academically, she thrives in non-physical subjects but struggles with athletics. Her skills include proficient sewing, primarily used for plush doll creation, and capable cooking. She also demonstrates an affinity for robotics, modifying a dog plushie with a walking robot kit. Her personal interests include a fondness for stew. She owns a dog named Pechi.

Her series development shows gradual maturation. Initially adjusting to rural life after relocating via airplane, she forms close friendships with Komari, Natsumi, Renge Miyauchi (who nicknames her "Hotarun"), and others. Stories depict her experiences through seasonal changes, school activities, and community events, reinforcing her adaptability and deepening bonds. In the third season, her growth is illustrated through reflective flashbacks to her younger self and new interactions, like indirectly mentoring younger characters such as Shiori alongside Renge. She remains present through the culmination of the school year, including Suguru Koshigaya's graduation, highlighting themes of change. Her background includes her name meaning "firefly" and befriending one in an episode.
