Description
Pirotess is a dark elf from the island of Marmo and appears as a supporting character in the anime Welcome to Lodoss Island. She comes from the community of dark elves who dwell in the Forsaken Forest on Marmo, a people who follow the worship of the gods Kardis and Falaris. In appearance, she is tall and slender with a lightly muscular build, very long white hair, yellow or hazel eyes, slightly dark skin, and the long pointed ears characteristic of elf kind. Her profession combines the roles of spirit user, warrior, and assassin, and she is counted among the finest warriors of the dark elves, a figure of graceful beauty and deadly skill.
Her background is shaped by her first encounter with Ashram, the Black Knight of Marmo. Pirotess was originally sent as an assassin to kill him, but she was so moved by his strength of will that she abandoned her mission, became his devoted aide, and eventually his lover. Her personality is defined by fierce loyalty, quiet composure, and an unwavering sense of purpose centered on Ashram. She seldom leaves his side and regards the protection of his life as her deepest commitment, even when it places her own life at risk. In her own view, her devotion to him brings her happiness, and she holds firmly to her convictions regardless of how others judge the dark elves.
Her motivations are tied closely to this bond. When the sorcerer Wagnard ordered her to capture the high elf Deedlit and deliver her as a sacrifice to revive the goddess Kardis, Pirotess carried out the task as far as she could. When she found the capture impossible, she chose to abandon the mission and rejoin Ashram at Fire Dragon Mountain rather than return to Marmo in failure. She also recognizes the formidable power of the sword called Shooting Star, and she dedicates herself to shielding Ashram from the dangers that come with it, accepting that this duty could cost her life.
In the story, she serves as Ashram's personal adjutant, protector, and trusted confidant, while standing in opposition to the heroes who fight against Marmo. As one of the best warriors among the dark elves, she can match nearly any opponent in combat. Only the high elf Deedlit and Ashram himself, whose skill goes beyond what is normally possible for a human, are known to equal her abilities. Even she is cautious when facing the berserkers of Hyuri, warriors feared by dark elves as well as humans. Her martial skill is supported by her training in spirit magic, which she uses to disappear from sight, and by her methods as an assassin, which include the use of a poisoned short blade to dispatch her targets.
Her development is inseparable from her relationship with Ashram. When the war surrounding the resurrection of the destroyer goddess ends, she travels with him as he leaves Lodoss to seek a new land where they can live in peace. In the continuation of their journey in the land of Crystania, she takes the name Sheru and waits for three hundred years for Ashram to awaken. During this time she acquires a Chaos Ring and sets out on a journey to free his body from the control of the god beast Barbas. Throughout the events of Welcome to Lodoss Island and the wider story, her defining traits remain consistent: supreme skill as a dark elven warrior, the quiet menace of an assassin, and an unbreakable loyalty to the man she chose to follow.
