Description
Aura Maha Haibaru is the queen of the Kingdom of Foundation and serves as a central antagonist. At a glance, she appears to be a young girl, but this is a deceptive illusion. In reality, she is an adult woman in her fifties. Her youthful appearance is the result of an accidental exposure to an anti-aging drug she was developing, which caused her body to regress into a childlike state before permanently halting the aging process. Despite her small stature, she is exceptionally intelligent and carries herself with a mature, regal demeanor.
Her background is rooted in genetic science. During the Cosmic Era 50s, she worked as a geneticist at the Mendel colony's research institute. There, she was a fierce rival of Ulen Hibiki, the creator of the Ultimate Coordinator, but shared a strong philosophical alignment with fellow researcher Gilbert Durandal. Both believed in correcting a twisted world, with Durandal conceiving the Destiny Plan, a system that would assign social roles based on genetic aptitude. Aura’s mission was to create the beings who would manage and lead that new world: the Accords.
Aura’s personality is defined by immense arrogance and cruelty. She holds a profound belief in the superiority of her Accord project and looks down on others, including Kira Yamato, whom she derides as a failure. Her ruthlessness is absolute; she is willing to sacrifice her own capital city and people to achieve her goals, and she displays a disturbing joy when witnessing mass destruction, such as the firing of the Requiem superweapon. Despite her disdain for death when it comes to others, she possesses a strong fear of her own mortality, panicking and fleeing when her own life is directly threatened.
As the queen of Foundation, she presents her nation as a harmonious haven where Naturals and Coordinators coexist. This is a facade for a brutal dictatorship where the Destiny Plan is strictly enforced and dissent is violently suppressed. Her primary motivation is to realize the Destiny Plan across the entire world, succeeding where her old friend Gilbert Durandal failed. She seeks to use her Accords, whom she calls her children, to subjugate the nations of the Earth Sphere and eliminate what she sees as the flaws of free will and conflict.
In the story, she orchestrates the Foundation Conflict in C.E. 75. She initially collaborates with the peacekeeping organization Compass as a political ally, but this is a deception to create chaos, discredit her enemies, and kidnap the coordinator Lacus Clyne, whom she considers her creation. From her command ship, the Gullveig, she directs the war, using nuclear provocations to frame the Eurasian Federation and seizing control of the Requiem to hold the world hostage.
Her key relationships are complex. She views the members of the Black Knight Squad, her Accord warriors, as her children, though her affection is conditional on their success, and she is cold to those who fail. Orphee Lam Tao, the leader of the squad, is her most loyal follower and refers to her as mother. She shares a deep, ideological bond with Gilbert Durandal, keeping a framed picture of him in her room and continuing his work long after his death. Her relationship with Lacus Clyne is that of a creator to a creation, as she is the one who genetically modified Lacus into an Accord, leading her to claim ownership over her. She feels only disdain for Kira Yamato, seeing him as an obsolete model who interferes with her plans.
Throughout the conflict, Aura remains confident in her superiority, but her arrogance proves to be a weakness. She repeatedly falls for decoys and tactical ploys designed to exploit her contempt for her enemies. Her development is a steady descent from a composed, manipulative queen to a furious and desperate tyrant as her plans are systematically thwarted. In the end, she is killed in the explosion of her flagship, the Gullveig, after a final moment of fearful panic, meeting her end while still maniacally fixated on firing the Requiem.
As a geneticist, Aura is an extremely capable scientist, being the sole creator of the Accords. While she does not personally pilot a mobile suit, her notable ability lies in her leadership and strategic cunning, having built a technologically advanced nation and orchestrated a multi-front war. Her true genius is in biological engineering, having successfully developed both the anti-aging drug that altered her own body and the advanced psychic abilities of the Accords, which include mind-reading, telepathy, and brainwashing.
