Description
Catherine is the drag persona of Shinya Okama, a heterosexual college student who becomes an employee at an okama bar, which is a type of cross-dressing or gay bar in Japan. Catherine is not a separate person but a carefully constructed female identity that Shinya assumes while working, complete with a wig, makeup, and women's clothing. The creation of Catherine stems from an unusual incident where Shinya, after being dressed as a woman by friends while intoxicated at a party, sees a photograph of himself and, having no memory of the event, falls in love with his own image, believing her to be a beautiful stranger. Upon discovering the truth, he is persuaded to work at the bar Maurice, where his friend introduces him to a professional cross-dresser who helps him perfect his female appearance, leading to the birth of the Catherine persona.

Catherine is described as surprisingly attractive and cute, a fact that initially fuels Shinya's own narcissistic infatuation with his reflection. However, the character's role becomes more complex when Shinya, while presenting as Catherine, meets Miki, a female college student and a regular at the bar who bears an uncanny physical resemblance to Catherine. This meeting shifts Shinya's motivations entirely; he falls in love with Miki at first sight, and his goals as Catherine become tied to his desire to win Miki's affection as a man. Catherine serves as the primary means through which Shinya interacts with Miki, as she only knows him in this female guise and they quickly become friends.

Within the story's events, Catherine acts as a tool for Shinya to navigate a difficult romantic situation. Miki already has a boyfriend who is actively trying to initiate a physical relationship with her. Because he cannot approach Miki as his male self without revealing his secret or complicating their existing friendship, Shinya uses Catherine to stay close to her. His motivations as Catherine involve subtly sabotaging Miki's relationship with her boyfriend and preventing her from making further romantic or physical progress with him. This creates a central conflict where Shinya must maintain the illusion of Catherine while working against Miki's best interests from her perspective.

Key relationships for Catherine include her friendship with Miki, the bar owner known as Mama-rin who favors her, and a more problematic dynamic with Yamazaki Tarou, a professional cross-dresser who helps Shinya with his transformation and later makes increasingly aggressive sexual advances toward him as Catherine. The primary development for Catherine involves the increasing difficulty of maintaining the double identity as Shinya's feelings for Miki grow. The persona is a means to an end, but it is also the only connection Shinya has to the woman he loves, forcing him to develop the character further and perform femininity more convincingly to keep the deception alive. Catherine's most notable ability is the sheer convincingness of the disguise. Shinya, as Catherine, is able to pass so completely as a woman that he not only fools his new love interest but also becomes a popular figure at the bar, demonstrating a remarkable physical transformation that is central to the plot.
