Description
Midori Fukami is the central protagonist of the episode titled Midori no Mamorigami, which is part of the original video anthology Fujiko F Fujio no SF Tanpen Theater. She is depicted as a high school student with a ponytail, and her story begins when she boards a flight to Okinawa with her parents for a family trip. The plane crashes in a snowy mountain, and she is the only survivor alongside a fellow passenger, a student named Goro Sakaguchi. Upon waking, she finds herself in an endless jungle where no animals or people can be found. Throughout her journey with Goro, she experiences mysterious events that keep her safe, such as finding nourishing fruit, her blistered feet healing overnight, and being saved from drowning by vines. As they travel, they discover that Tokyo has been overtaken by dense greenery. From old newspapers, they learn that a powerful biological weapon leaked and wiped out all animal life, including humanity. The revelation causes Goro to lose his sanity and run off into the jungle. Alone and despairing, Midori returns to her own home, where she attempts suicide by cutting her wrists. She later awakens in the care of a man named Takashi Shirakawa, a former television director who had also been preserved by extreme cold. He explains that the plants and molds on Earth mutated after the extinction event, developing a protective instinct toward surviving humans because they need the carbon dioxide that animals exhale. This protective force, referred to as the guardian god, healed her wounds and prevented her death. Midori transforms from a grief-stricken and hopeless girl into someone who regains a sense of purpose. Motivated by the possibility that other survivors exist, she decides to accompany Shirakawa on a journey to search for them. Her key relationships include her brief and strained partnership with Goro, whose breakdown contrasts with her own eventual resilience, and her alliance with Shirakawa, who provides knowledge and guidance. She has no supernatural abilities of her own, but she is continually aided by the evolved plant life around her, which acts as a silent protector. Her development is marked by a shift from passive victim to active explorer, accepting the new world and moving forward with hope.
