Description
Mr. Brock is the English dub name for the character Bernard Shott, the main antagonist of the 1990 anime film Flight of the White Wolf. He is a dog trainer whose champion dog, Bo, is killed by the pet wolf Gray during a celebration at the Clagg residence. This event sets the story in motion, as Brock vows to hunt down and destroy the wolf. He assembles a hunting party and pursues Gray relentlessly across the Wisconsin wilderness, tracking the animal by helicopter, using bear traps, and coordinating with local police. Brock is driven by a mix of grief, pride, and a sense of justice—he believes the wolf is a dangerous predator that must be eliminated. His determination makes him a formidable obstacle for the protagonist, Russet Clagg, who is trying to lead Gray to safety in the Nicolet National Forest. Brock’s relationship with Russet evolves from one of adversarial pursuit to a moment of understanding. When he finally corners Russet and Gray, Russet pleads for the wolf’s life, explaining that Gray is his best friend and that he intends to set him free. Brock, moved by the boy’s sincerity and resolve, relents and allows Gray to go, even tossing Bo’s dog tag after them as a symbolic gesture. This choice marks a turning point in Brock’s character, showing that beneath his vengeful exterior lies a capacity for compassion and respect. He has no extraordinary abilities; his role is defined by his hunting skills, his influence in the community, and his emotional arc from a vengeful hunter to a man who ultimately chooses mercy.
