Description
Makoto Kyogoku, 18, is the karate club captain at Haido High School, renowned as "The Prince of Kicks" for his exceptional martial arts skills. He first noticed Sonoko Suzuki cheering for her friend Ran Mouri at a tournament. Their relationship blossomed after he rescued Sonoko from a serial killer stalking her while working at his family's inn. Despite a long-distance relationship due to Makoto's frequent international tournaments and overseas training, Sonoko sends him handmade gifts to maintain their connection. Makoto remains loyal, though his karate dedication and competitive nature sometimes strain their interactions. Sonoko eventually introduces him to her approving parents.
Typically calm, collected, and observant—traits sharpened by martial arts training and an influential encounter with Tatsuhito Takami in his youth—Makoto maintains composure during crises. However, his demeanor falters concerning Sonoko, for whom he shows significant devotion, even skipping important tournaments. He holds a somewhat conservative outlook, often expressing concern over Sonoko wearing modern or revealing clothing and worrying about her catching a chill. A consistent band-aid above his left eyebrow conceals a scar; later, this band-aid bears a photo from a date with Sonoko, serving as a personal talisman. Makoto occasionally displays carelessness, like sleeping soundly during an investigation or missing critical events, leading to wrongful suspicion. He is generally well-mannered, polite, and serious, especially with Sonoko's family or in high-stakes situations.
Physically, Makoto is tall (184 cm), well-built, tan, with short black hair, prominent eyebrows, and frequently described as handsome. He often wears wide glasses when not competing. His martial arts prowess is extraordinary, marked by a 400-win streak in international competitions, ended only when he forfeited to meet Sonoko's parents. He demonstrates exceptional combat abilities: disarming multiple armed opponents, catching BB pellets mid-air while wearing a gasmask, breaking a katana with a single kick, and knocking out groups of assailants uninjured. His strength allows him to throw a bowling ball hard enough to smash a lane's headboard, lift the tail of a speeding van to prevent a collision, and bring down a building pillar through repeated kicks and punches. He exhibits remarkable agility, speed, and pain tolerance, enduring knife wounds with minimal reaction. Keen observational skills enable him to detect subtle physical discrepancies, like finger-length differences, identifying impostors such as Kaitou Kid disguised as Sonoko. He quickly memorizes and replicates complex fight choreography.
In "The Fist of Blue Sapphire," Makoto travels to Singapore for a karate tournament, joined by Sonoko, Ran, and Kogoro Mouri. When his sponsor, Sherilyn Tan, is murdered, Makoto loses eligibility for the final round, prompting Sonoko to become his replacement sponsor. Investigating the theft of the Blue Sapphire, Makoto confronts Kaitou Kid at the gem's vault. He nearly overpowers Kid but is distracted by a soccer ball projectile launched by Conan Edogawa, allowing Kid's escape. Makoto's presence poses a significant challenge to both Kid and Conan, who must avoid prolonged scrutiny due to his ability to detect their disguises. His physical interventions prove crucial in resolving the case, including preventing a culprit's suicide. The Singapore events underscore his protective role for Sonoko and integration into high-stakes scenarios involving Suzuki family interests.
