Description
Belgrieve is the central protagonist and adoptive father of Angeline in this story. In his youth, he was an aspiring adventurer, but his promising career was tragically cut short when he lost his right leg below the knee to a monster during an early mission, forcing him to retire. Following this life-changing injury, he returned to his quiet home village of Tornela (also referred to as Turnera) to live a peaceful life, making a living by protecting the village from monsters and collecting herbs. It was during this time, while foraging in the nearby woods, that he discovered an abandoned baby and decided to raise the child as his own, naming her Angeline.

Personality-wise, Belgrieve is a selfless, friendly, and humble individual who is deeply respected by the locals of Tornela. He is a calm and collected man, a demeanor that has come with age and experience. He is quick to downplay his own abilities, genuinely believing himself to be mundane and weak due to his disability and his low rank as a former E-rank adventurer. Despite his own self-assessment, he is inherently good-natured and rarely dislikes anyone, willing to give people a chance based on their actions rather than their species or background. His humility is such that attempts to correct exaggerations of his strength often lead others to believe he is merely being modest, cementing his reputation as a humble hero.

Belgrieve's primary motivation stems from his protective and nurturing nature. He is a devoted father whose main concern is the well-being of his daughter, Angeline. He misses her dearly after she leaves home to become an adventurer, and he worries that her rapid success may have made her arrogant and careless in the face of danger, a flaw that could prove fatal. To address this, he is willing to take difficult emotional actions, such as challenging her to a serious duel to test her resolve, believing it is necessary for her safety even though it causes him personal anguish. While he is proud of her accomplishments, his actions are consistently driven by a desire to protect her and ensure she does not let her skills lead to overconfidence.

Within the story, Belgrieve serves as the emotional anchor and the source of inspiration. He is the well-respected protector of his village and a teacher to the local children, but his role is deeply intertwined with his daughter's journey. Angeline's legendary tales of her father, whom she calls the Red Ogre, spread far and wide, inadvertently creating a legendary reputation for him that he feels is unearned. He is a steadfast figure who rejects calls to adventure from the outside world, preferring to stay in Tornela, which he considers inseparable from his identity. His role is not about seeking glory but about maintaining a stable, loving home and a safe community.

The most significant relationship in Belgrieve's life is with his adopted daughter, Angeline. He raised her with love and care, teaching her everything he knew about combat and survival, creating a very strong and loving parent-child bond. Angeline idolizes him, while he remains protective and proud of her. His other key relationships are with the community of Tornela, whom he has sworn to protect, and with any young adventurers or children he trains. He also has a notable encounter with Helvetica Bordeaux, a noble who tries to forcibly recruit him as an officer, an offer Belgrieve politely but firmly rejects.

Belgrieve undergoes subtle but meaningful development. Initially, he is shown as a retired man living with the regret of a lost dream, yet content in his humble life. As the story progresses, he must confront his own insecurities about his worth compared to his S-rank daughter and grapple with his role as her guide now that she has surpassed him. His wisdom and experience are consistently shown to be invaluable, teaching him that his value as a father and protector is not diminished by his physical limitations or lower adventurer rank. A significant part of his development involves learning that his fears for Angeline are largely unfounded and that he has successfully raised a capable and level-headed woman.

Despite his wooden leg, Belgrieve is a formidable fighter, embodying the archetype of a handicapped badass. He maintains a rigorous training regimen that has kept his skills sharp over the years. His fighting style is not based on overwhelming power or speed but on efficiency, precision, and the wisdom gained from a lifetime of experience. He is a pragmatic hero who is not afraid to use underhanded tactics to survive, such as throwing a bag of ground onions and pepper as an improvised tear gas grenade to blind a monster before striking its vitals. While he can hold his own against many opponents, he is also acutely aware of his limitations, including his age and stamina, and is not the invincible hero his daughter describes. His true ability lies in his calm judgment, deep knowledge, and effective, economical combat techniques that command respect even from higher-ranked adventurers.
