Description
Angeline is the central character of this story, a young woman who was discovered as an abandoned baby in the forest by the retired adventurer Belgrieve. He found her in a basket adorned with leaves that acted as protection charms and decided to raise her as his own daughter in the village of Turnera. Growing up, she was deeply inspired by her adoptive father, listening to tales of his adventuring days and learning the fundamentals of swordsmanship from him. At the age of twelve, driven by a desire to follow in his footsteps and protect the weak, she left their quiet home to become an adventurer in the Royal Capital. Five years later, at just seventeen years old, she has achieved the highest possible status in her profession, earning the title of an S-Rank adventurer and becoming known throughout the land as the Black-Haired War Maiden or the Black-Haired Valkyrie.
Despite her formidable reputation and terrifying strength, Angeline's personality retains a very earnest and devoted core. Her primary driving motivation is not wealth, fame, or power, but a deep-seated love and admiration for her father. Her greatest wish is to make him proud and to return to his side in Turnera. This creates the central conflict of her life; she is so exceptionally skilled and reliable that her guild in Orphen has become over-reliant on her. With the number of dangerous monsters increasing while other capable adventurers are scarce, she is constantly saddled with urgent, high-level requests that she feels a strong sense of duty to complete. This leaves her perpetually unable to take the vacation she desperately needs to go home. While she accepts this responsibility, believing it is natural for the strong to help the weak, it is a source of deep frustration and melancholy for her, as every delayed visit feels like a personal failure.
In her role within the story, Angeline serves as a powerful catalyst whose fame and strength draw both attention and danger to her father's quiet life. She is the lens through which the world of high-stakes adventuring is viewed, but her emotional heart remains firmly in the village. Her narrative is a constant balancing act between her duties as a top-tier adventurer and her personal longing for family. Her key relationships are central to her character. Her bond with Belgrieve is the emotional core of the series; she is determined to prove that his teachings and legacy are worthy of honor, often making a point to mention his name on her quests. She also shares a close camaraderie with her two party members, Anessa the archer and Miriam the mage, who support her in battle and accompany her on her eventually successful journey back to Turnera. Her compassionate nature also leads her to form significant bonds with others in need, such as protecting the noble Seren Bordeaux so she could see her dying father, or later taking on a protective, sisterly role towards Charlotte, a former enemy.
Throughout her development, Angeline begins to face complexities beyond her control. While she initially sees herself purely as Belgrieve's daughter and a protector of the people, she starts to grapple with unsettling questions about her own origins. There is a growing awareness that she might have demonic heritage, a prospect she finds troubling as she loves her adoptive father and does not want to be different from him. This adds a layer of internal struggle to her character, forcing her to confront who she is beyond the identity she has built for herself. As the story progresses, her role expands from a dutiful daughter and adventurer to a more independent leader who must use her wits and strength to protect those who have become her new family, even as she continues to hold her father as her guiding light.
In terms of notable abilities, Angeline is a supremely gifted swordsman whose skills are a direct product of Belgrieve's early training, honed to a razor's edge through years of relentless real-world experience. She is powerful enough to single-handedly slay dragons and wyverns, wipe out swarms of giant ants, and defeat disaster-class monsters that other adventurers cannot handle. Her reputation is such that she is effectively the sole pillar of the Orphen Guild, capable of resolving conflicts and threats that would otherwise spell disaster for the region. Her fighting style appears to be a practical and lethal form of swordsmanship, emphasizing efficiency and power, and she carries herself with the quiet confidence of someone who knows she is among the strongest in the world.
