TV-Series
Description
Gōzaburō Arase is a detective serving in the Third Materials Compiling Group, also known as Comps-3, within the Shinjuku Police's community safety division. Before joining the police, Arase was a member of the yakuza, though his reasons for leaving that life are not disclosed. He originally came from the Organized Crime Countermeasures Division, Section 4, which is the anti-gang unit, before his transfer to Comps-3. His past in the underworld has left him with enduring connections, which he sometimes uses for unpublicized operations. These activities have led to disciplinary actions and being reprimanded by his superior, Danjo Tozawa.
Standing 176 centimeters tall, Arase has short black hair, brown skin, and a lean, athletic frame. His appearance is often noted to resemble a yakuza or criminal more than a typical police officer. A large yakuza tattoo depicting a tiger superimposed over flowers and flowing water covers his back, a feature that is sometimes unintentionally revealed during his duties. His standard attire consists of a black shirt and trousers, occasionally paired with a grey jacket.
Arase possesses a striking dual nature. In his everyday interactions, he is typically calm, quiet, and polite, often wearing a slight, seemingly gentle smile. He usually acts as a stoic shadow to his partner Tsubaki Iwanome, letting her handle conversations. However, this placid exterior masks a fierce and violent interior. When provoked or during a confrontation, Arase explodes with sudden, overwhelming force, becoming animated and bright-eyed in a way that starkly contrasts with his usual relaxed demeanor. His colleagues have compared him to a wild animal or carnivore, noting that violence comes to him naturally and instinctively. Arase is self-aware about this aspect of his personality and openly acknowledges his reliance on violence, referring to himself as a scumbag.
In the story, Arase serves as a key figure in the Shinjuku Police, often investigating the supernatural and criminal cases that arise following the reincarnation of the Corpse God. He maintains a low opinion of criminals and lowlifes, a disdain that likely stems from his own past affiliations. This was evident when he brutally dismantled the gang Sons of the Styx, beating eight of its members near to death and causing the gang to dissolve. This incident left a deep impression on the gang's informant, Takumi Kuruya, and its leader, Kuon Higuro. His professional relationships are defined by his partnership with Iwanome, where he acts as the necessary physical force to complement her methods. He also has encounters with other main characters, such as Corpse God and Misaki Sakimiya. During one operation, he intercepted a drone piloted by Takumi Kuruya and later warned Corpse God and Misaki to sever ties with the hacker, an encounter that ended with Misaki kicking him in the chest to escape, leaving a visible shoe imprint. Despite his keen instincts, his vigilance can lapse, as demonstrated when he failed to notice the infiltration of the mercenary known as Lemmings into the police department.
Arase’s development is subtle, as he is a character largely defined by his established, dualistic nature. His primary notable abilities lie in his physical prowess and combat skills. He is an instinctively proficient fighter who wields violence as a primary tool for problem-solving. His background as both a former yakuza and a detective in the anti-gang unit provides him with unique insights into the criminal underworld, which he leverages during investigations. These skills make him a formidable, if unorthodox, detective. In his spare time, he has a hobby of making rubber stamps, a quiet activity that contrasts sharply with his professional life.
