Description
Antonio is a significant supporting character in the anime Jarinko Chie, appearing in both the 1981 film and the subsequent television series. He is a large, yellow-haired cat with brown eyes, owned by the local yakuza boss who runs a gambling house in the neighborhood where the story takes place. Antonio serves as the boss's prized enforcer and the establishment's bouncer, having built a fearsome reputation as an incredibly tough and battle-hardened feline. It is even rumored that he once killed a Tosa Inu, a breed of dog traditionally used in Japanese dog fighting, cementing his status as the undisputed king of the local animal underworld.

Despite his brutish and intimidating exterior, Antonio possesses an unexpected and somewhat endearing skill: he is surprisingly good at playing ping-pong, a detail that adds a layer of quirky charm to his character. His personality is defined by his role as a champion fighter; he is aggressive, confident in his strength, and accustomed to winning any confrontation. This pride and his master's animosity toward the protagonist's father, Tetsu, lead him directly into his most crucial role in the story: a climactic brawl with the protagonist Chie's own pet cat, a strong and scrappy tomcat named Kotetsu. The fight is brutal and has permanent consequences. Despite his fearsome reputation, Kotetsu defeats Antonio, inflicting a crippling injury by tearing off one of his testicles. This loss is not just physical but also symbolic, as Antonio is said to have never regained his former strength or "manliness" after the battle.

The aftermath of this single event drives Antonio's key relationships and his ultimate fate. Weakened from his fight with Kotetsu, he becomes vulnerable and is soon after mauled and killed by a neighborhood dog, a victim he likely would have easily dominated in his prime. His death is a pivotal moment in the series. His master, the yakuza boss, is so heartbroken over the loss of his beloved pet that it inspires a complete life change; he abandons his life of crime and uses his savings to open a small okonomiyaki restaurant, seeking an honest living. In this way, Antonio's life and tragic death serve as a major catalyst for another character's redemption. Antonio's legacy, however, lives on through his son, Antonio Jr., who inherits his father's grudge and later seeks revenge against Kotetsu for the injury and dishonor he suffered. Through his ferocity, his hidden talent for table tennis, his brutal defeat, and his impactful death, Antonio stands as a memorable figure whose presence is felt throughout the world of Jarinko Chie.
