Description
Kōzō Yurine is a supporting character in Chie the Brat, known locally as the okonomiyaki shop owner of Katagiya. His background is marked by a stark transformation: he was originally the president of a gambling den called Yūkyō Kurabu, a business that flourished until Tetsu Takemoto’s cheating drove away customers. Attempting to collect a debt from Tetsu, Yurine encountered Tetsu’s young daughter Chie instead. The turning point in his life came when his beloved cat Antonio died in a fight with Tetsu’s cat Kotetsu. Deeply affected, Yurine abandoned the gambling world and opened Katagiya, an okonomiyaki restaurant, as a way to live honestly. He later took in Antonio’s son, Antonio Jr., and raised him.

In personality, Yurine is generally a good-natured and easygoing man, often described as a foolish but kind person. He is a devoted cat lover and has a soft spot for his feline companions. However, he has a heavy drinking habit; after consuming more than a liter of alcohol, his personality shifts dramatically into a belligerent and violent state, even overwhelming Tetsu. This dual nature makes him unpredictable but also a source of comic relief. His motivations are rooted in a desire to leave his criminal past behind and maintain a peaceful life, though his temper and old associations sometimes pull him back into trouble.

Yurine plays a recurring role in the story as a fixture of the neighborhood. His shop serves as a gathering place for many characters, especially Tetsu, who often hangs out there. His relationship with Tetsu is complex—initially adversarial due to debt, it evolves into a grudging friendship, though Yurine remains wary of Tetsu’s schemes. He is also friendly toward Chie, showing a paternal side at times. His personal life includes a divorce from his wife Mitsuko and a strained relationship with his son Kaoru, whom he occasionally meets in secret. Over the course of the series, Yurine undergoes a quiet development: after his father’s death, he reconciles with the memory of his father and changes his given name from Kōzō (written with the character for light) back to his original birth name Kōzō (written with the character for cultivate), symbolizing his acceptance of his past and a move toward personal closure.

Notable abilities are tied to his past; he is experienced in gambling and can handle himself in a brawl, especially when intoxicated. His most distinctive trait is his extreme transformation under alcohol, which is both a flaw and a defining characteristic.
