Description
O Mascarado is the name used in the international English-language edition of the anime Super Grand Prix for the mysterious masked man known in the original Japanese series as Nick Lauda. He enters the story at a low point for the protagonist, a young stock car driver who has just suffered a serious accident during a race and finds his hopes of becoming a Formula 1 driver in doubt. Approaching the injured driver with a proposal, O Mascarado offers him a second chance to compete, now with the backing of the Katori Motors team, because he is convinced of the young man's talent behind the wheel.

His defining trait is secrecy. He always appears with his face covered, and the film gives little direct explanation of who he is or why he wears the mask. His manner, however, suggests someone with deep experience in motor racing. In the original version his name deliberately echoes the real-world Formula 1 driver Niki Lauda, and in one flashback sequence he makes that connection explicit, placing him as a figure with a personal history in the sport.

His motivation centers on belief in the protagonist. He acts before anyone else does, seeking out the young driver, bringing him into the Katori Motors drivers' house, and standing by him as he faces teammates and rivals who mock his humble car and modest background. In this way he serves as the catalyst of the entire story, since without his intervention the protagonist would not have returned to competitive racing.

His key relationship is with the protagonist, to whom he acts as a mentor and protector rather than a rival. He also connects the young driver to other important figures, such as the team's support staff and the people running the racing operation. The mask keeps an emotional distance, yet his actions are consistently supportive, making him a figure of trust in an environment full of competition and hostility.

Over the course of the condensed film, O Mascarado changes little, because the movie covers only the first phase of the original series and leaves much of his background unrevealed. He remains a steady, mysterious benefactor whose own story is never fully told. His notable abilities are his sharp eye for racing talent, his authority within the racing world, and his capacity to open doors for a promising but unproven driver, all of which make him central to the protagonist's path toward Formula 1.
