Description
Joe Asakura, known as Joe the Condor, serves as the second-in-command, marksman, and weapons expert of the Science Ninja Team. His birth name was George Asakura, the son of scientists Giuseppe and Katarina Asakura on BC Island. When he was eight years old, he witnessed the murder of his parents by a female Galactor agent, an event that left him critically injured and instilled a deep, burning desire for vengeance against the organization. He was rescued by Dr. Kozaburo Nambu, who falsified his death and raised him under the new name Joe to protect him from Galactor.
Joe is characterized by a headstrong and impulsive nature, often preferring direct confrontation and brute force over negotiation or elaborate strategy. He presents a cynical, lone-wolf exterior, choosing to live alone in a camping trailer, but beneath this facade lies a loyal and friendly individual who genuinely cares for his teammates. While he frequently clashes with the team's leader, Ken the Eagle, over differing tactical approaches, their bond is one of deep, unspoken trust and respect, and he never truly wishes to betray them.
The defining chapter of Joe's life begins after his apparent death in the original series. Presumed dead after a final battle, he resurfaces in Gatchaman II, having been saved by a former Galactor scientist named Dr. Raphael. His life was preserved through extensive cybernetic reconstruction, transforming him into a powerful cyborg. This new body grants him immense physical strength, near-indestructibility, and enhanced durability, allowing him to survive explosions and extreme conditions that would be fatal to a normal human. However, this transformation is not without significant drawbacks. His cybernetic body requires periodic recharging, and a bomb was implanted near his heart as part of a plan to destroy Galactor's leader, X, though it prevents him from getting too close to his ultimate target.
Joe is deeply conflicted about his new existence. He views himself as a combat machine rather than a human being, which fuels a reckless tendency to throw himself into life-threatening situations to protect his friends, believing he is expendable. He harbors a profound sadness over his condition, at one point expressing to Dr. Raphael his simple wish to live as a normal human. Despite this, his thirst for revenge against Galactor remains absolute, and his role as the team's gunner and primary combatant becomes even more crucial. He wields his signature feather shurikens with incredible accuracy and relies on his enhanced body to act as the team's vanguard.
His return creates initial suspicion and mystery among the team, as he operates from the shadows before dramatically revealing himself. His relationship with Jun the Swan also deepens in this series, as she becomes more protective of him and senses his inner turmoil. Joe's journey in Gatchaman II is one of a tragic hero struggling with his lost humanity while wielding his newfound power as a weapon against the evil that destroyed his family, hoping to finally fulfill his mission and perhaps find peace. Notable abilities include his marksmanship, use of feather shurikens, and as a cyborg, superhuman strength, endurance, and a greatly increased resistance to injury.
