TV-Series
Description
Anderson serves as the Director of the International Science Organization (ISO) during the original Gatchaman series and into Gatchaman II. In this capacity, he holds the highest authority within the organization, chairing meetings with international representatives to coordinate efforts against global threats such as the terrorist group Galactor. Despite his administrative role, he possesses considerable scientific expertise, demonstrated by his understanding of complex subjects like nuclear power and neutron reactions. He is known to personally handle critical operations, including transporting sensitive components such as an ultracomputer core aboard his specially equipped private jet, which features an ejector seat with a built-in radio for Morse code transmission. He is also seen enjoying cigars during moments of downtime.
Initially, Anderson is unaware of the existence of the Science Ninja Team, the covert strike force created by Dr. Kozaburo Nambu. While he eventually learns the civilian identities of its members, he has no direct authority to issue them orders; operational command remains solely with Dr. Nambu. Nevertheless, Anderson frequently requests the team's assistance during major crises and develops a growing respect for their abilities over time. He defers to Nambu's scientific and security judgments, consulting with him closely on matters related to Galactor's activities, while maintaining oversight of allied military forces like the Red Impulse Squadron through the ISO's Information Bureau. His personality is characterized as stern and rule-oriented, often prioritizing protocol even during emergencies, as seen in some adaptations where he is portrayed as a strict mentor figure.
Anderson's most significant role in Gatchaman II involves his direct involvement in a critical mission. He is present at the 1st Naval Command, where he is supervising the development of specialized radar technology for the Science Ninja Team. It is during this time that a Galactor attack on the base takes place, leading to Anderson sustaining critical injuries. This attack also serves as the narrative introduction for his grandson, Sam. Anderson ultimately succumbs to these injuries off-screen between the events of Gatchaman II and the subsequent series, Gatchaman Fighter. His death creates a leadership vacuum that results in Dr. Nambu becoming the new ISO Director. In other continuities, such as the original OVA series, Anderson retains his role as ISO Director, attending high-level strategic meetings and witnessing key decisions that affect the Science Ninja Team, though his narrative presence in these versions is more minimal.
