Description
Shinji Itō is Takuru Miyashiro's close friend and a dedicated member of the Hekiho Academy newspaper club, known for his rational, reliable, and kind-hearted personality. He frequently expresses concern for Takuru's safety and criticizes his impulsive actions. Shinji possesses a strong interest in bizarre murders and nonfiction crime literature, which leads him to actively assist Takuru in investigating the Return of the New Generation Madness resurgence.

Prior to the main events, Shinji fell under the mind control of Wataru Sakuma. This control compelled him to commit the sixth murder in the Return of the New Generation Madness series, killing Takuru's younger sister, Yui Tachibana. Sakuma's manipulation implanted false memories and emotions within Shinji, including a fabricated love for Senri Minamisawa – a girl Takuru witnessed being experimented on before the Shibuya Earthquake. Sakuma implanted the belief that Takuru abandoned Senri, driving Shinji to devise a revenge plot against Takuru. This plan involved manipulating Takuru into investigating the murders, culminating in Yui's death and the intended killing of Takuru himself.

Operating under the aliases Ed Lucas and Max Cady as an accomplice to Serika Onoe (Amy), Shinji gathered intelligence on Takuru and the newspaper club, feeding information to Serika. While fulfilling this antagonistic role under mind control, he maintained a façade of friendship with Takuru, displaying faux affability even while preparing violence.

During the common route, Nono Kurusu disrupted Shinji's attempt to attack Takuru and Yui. She exposed the contradiction between his false memories of loving Senri and the reality that they never met, triggering a mental collapse that plunged Shinji into insanity from cognitive dissonance. In Uki Yamazoe's route, Uki intervened in the confrontation; Takuru attempted to stop her from attacking Shinji with her Di-Sword but accidentally impaled Uki instead, altering Shinji's fate compared to other narratives.

Following the resolution of the New Generation Madness events, Shinji fell into a coma alongside Senri Minamisawa, Hinae Arimura, Hana Kazuki, Uki Yamazoe, and Yuto Tachibana. In the "Silent Sky" narrative, he remains hospitalized in this unconscious state. The etymology of his name reflects characteristics of "real, genuine" (真) and "two" (二), while his surname Itou translates to "that one" (伊) and "wisteria" (藤).
