Description
Pyun Pyun Maru is the central character of the 1960s Toei Animation television comedy Pyunpyunmaru, which originated as a gag manga about a flustered young ninja. He is a child ninja in training who works at the Nandemo OK Jimusho, an agency that accepts any kind of assignment. Together with his younger brother Chibi-Maru, he takes on jobs of every description, from trivial errands to dangerous missions, and the pair specializes in resolving unexpected troubles and strange incidents caused by other ninjas.

The world he inhabits is loosely set in an era of ninjas and samurai but freely mixes in modern inventions, monsters, and cyborgs, so he constantly finds himself caught between traditional ninja business and absurd contemporary intrusions. His role in the story is that of the lead figure in an episodic gag series, with each episode built around a new request brought to the agency and the chaos that follows his attempts to complete it.

In personality, Pyun Pyun Maru is energetic, impulsive, and well-meaning, but he is far from a disciplined master of the ninja arts. He is reckless and easily flustered, and his enthusiasm tends to outrun his skill, which makes him a natural source of slapstick. Despite his frequent blunders, he approaches every job with sincerity and a willingness to throw himself into whatever problem has arisen.

His main motivation is to carry out the tasks given by his boss and to succeed as a ninja. He is especially eager to prove himself in front of Sayuri, a ninja girl who often joins the brothers on their assignments and with whom he is infatuated. His attempts to get closer to her are routinely ruined by Kemeko, a plain-looking ninja girl who is in love with him, much to his dismay. His relationship with Chibi-Maru is the closest in the series; the two work as a team, with Pyun Pyun Maru charging ahead while his younger brother follows along. Their employer, a shrewd and money-minded boss whose long beard serves as an extra pair of arms, sends the pair into whatever paying job comes through the door, no matter how silly or dangerous it may be.

In terms of development, the series is an episodic gag comedy, and Pyun Pyun Maru is a largely consistent character rather than one who undergoes a dramatic arc. His growth is expressed through the escalating variety and absurdity of the cases he handles, while his core traits of eagerness, clumsiness, and good-heartedness remain steady throughout the run.

His notable abilities include the basic ninja skills expected of a trainee in his world, such as stealth, acrobatics, and fundamental ninjutsu, along with a quick-witted resourcefulness that lets him improvise his way out of impossible predicaments. He is also at ease with the anachronistic technology that surrounds him, and the show frequently places him in contact with cars, airplanes, televisions, and modern weapons during his missions. Ultimately, his defining quality is not mastery but persistence; he keeps finding a way, however clumsy, to work through the troubles that other ninjas create.
