Description
Marie Millet is a young girl and one of the central supporting characters in the 1967 anime series Ogon Bat, also known as Golden Bat. She is the daughter of a French archaeologist, Professor Mire, and was born in Japan. Her mother passed away at some point before the events of the series. Marie is characterized as sweet-natured, gentle, and emotionally sensitive, with a strong sense of justice and a deep capacity for compassion. Her most defining trait is her unwavering faith in the hero Ogon Bat, whom she regards as a protector and a symbol of hope.

Marie's role in the story begins when her father, an archaeologist searching for the lost continent of Atlantis, is captured or killed by the forces of the evil Dr. Erich Nazo (also known as Dr. Zero). She is rescued by Dr. Yamatone, a scientist who leads the fight against Nazo, and his son Terry. During their journey, Marie and Dr. Yamatone discover the ancient tomb of Ogon Bat, a golden skeletal warrior from Atlantis who was placed in suspended animation to awaken when great evil threatens the world. It is Marie who inadvertently revives Ogon Bat by shedding tears of sorrow and desperation over his sarcophagus, or in some iterations by pouring water onto his remains. Her emotional connection to the hero is so profound that from that moment onward, she is the only person who can summon him. She does so through a golden bat-shaped pin or brooch that Ogon Bat sends to her, which transforms into a symbol that calls him in times of need.

Marie's relationship with Ogon Bat is that of a devoted ally and a surrogate child. She looks up to him as a guardian and a figure of absolute goodness. She is also close to Dr. Yamatone, who becomes a father figure after her own father is lost, and to his son Terry, with whom she shares many adventures. Her courage grows as the series progresses; although initially a vulnerable child, she consistently faces danger to help her friends and to summon Ogon Bat against the various monsters and schemes of Dr. Nazo. She does not possess any superhuman abilities of her own. Her primary power is her emotional sincerity, which enables her to call upon Ogon Bat, and her role is that of a catalyst for the hero's intervention. Her character remains consistent throughout the series without a major arc of transformation, but she matures from a frightened girl into a brave and reliable companion who actively participates in the struggle against evil.
