Description
Mãe da Maya, also referred to simply as Mama or Mrs. Garrison, is a supporting character in the anime Thumbelina: A Magical Story. She is the mother of the young protagonist, Maya, and plays a crucial role in setting the story in motion. Her background is that of a caring but overwhelmed parent who struggles to manage her lively, tomboyish daughter. Exhausted by Maya’s mischievous behavior, she seeks the help of an old witch living on the edge of town. The witch gives her a magical copy of the fairy tale Thumbelina and instructs her to read it to Maya. Trusting the advice, she reads the story aloud, and after she falls asleep, Maya shrinks and is drawn into the book’s world—a dream realm created from her mother’s unconscious mind.
Personality-wise, the mother is depicted as loving and patient but visibly tired, often at her wit’s end. Her primary motivation is to find a way to reach her daughter and channel Maya’s energy in a positive direction. She genuinely cares for Maya and wants to guide her, but her conventional methods have proven ineffective, prompting her to turn to supernatural guidance. In the story, her role is primarily that of an inciting force: her actions lead directly to Maya’s adventure. She also serves as the emotional anchor for Maya’s journey, as the dream world is tied to her sleeping state, and the only way for Maya to return home is to wake her mother.
Key relationships center on her bond with Maya, which is warm but strained by Maya’s headstrong nature. She also interacts briefly with the witch, whom she respects as a source of wisdom. Throughout the series, her character does not undergo significant development, as she remains asleep for most of the narrative, but she reappears at the story’s conclusion when Maya finally wakes her. At that point, she is overjoyed to have her daughter back, and the experience subtly strengthens their connection. The mother possesses no magical abilities or notable powers; she is an ordinary human whose love and concern for her daughter drive the initial conflict. Her most notable ability is her capacity to seek unconventional help when needed, which ultimately sets the stage for Maya’s transformative adventure.
