Description
Hinako Mukaimizu is a 19-year-old university student who moves to a coastal town for college, embracing surfing passionately without a defined future path. Outwardly carefree and laid-back, she privately battles depression. Standing 175cm tall, she has brown eyes and light brown hair usually in a bun. Her typical casual attire includes an orange and white striped cardigan over a light yellow t-shirt with rolled blue shorts; for surfing, she wears a solid yellow two-piece swimsuit.
Her life shifts dramatically when fireworks cause a fire destroying her apartment. Rescued by Minato Hinageshi, a 21-year-old firefighter, she is drawn to his dependability. They form a relationship, bonding over surfing lessons he takes from her, aquarium visits, and singing "Brand New Story" together. This connection ends abruptly when Minato drowns during a solo surf session trying to save a jetskier.
Consumed by grief, Hinako abandons surfing and moves away from the beach, isolating herself. She discovers singing "Brand New Story" summons a water-based apparition of Minato visible only to her. She interacts deeply with this manifestation, even publicly, struggling to accept his loss. This reliance strains her relationships with Minato's sister, Yōko, and his colleague Wasabi Kawamura, who develops romantic feelings for her.
A turning point arrives when Yōko reveals Minato became a firefighter because Hinako saved him from drowning in their childhood. Hinako also finds a draft message on Minato's phone urging her to "ride her own wave," prompting her to reassess her dependence on his apparition. She enrolls in lifeguard training to reclaim independence and confront her grief.
Her development culminates when she and Yōko confront arsonists setting another building ablaze. Trapped inside, Hinako summons Minato's water form one final time, shaping it into a wave that douses the fire. Using a backboard as an improvised surfboard, she and Yōko ride this wave to safety, symbolizing her regained ability to navigate adversity. After Minato's spirit departs, she achieves lifeguard certification and returns to surfing. Hearing a recorded message from Minato at a Christmas celebration triggers tears, but she ultimately continues her life, balancing lifeguard duties with surfing as an independent individual.
