TV-Series
Description
Brad Bitou is a central figure in the Machine Robo Rescue organization, serving as its founder and commander. A man of around fifty years of age, he is a former researcher who, along with his colleague Hikaru Suidōbashi, was instrumental in the development of the advanced artificial intelligence that powers the series' rescue mecha, the Machine Robo. His past is marked by a difficult period when the research project accepted military funding, a decision made in the belief it was a temporary necessity to further their goals. This move led to the creation of a dangerously powerful combat-oriented unit, Stealth Robo, and caused a rift with a fellow scientist, the man who would become the villainous Doctor Kaiser. The destructive potential of that project was a chastening experience, which led Bitou to refocus entirely on using the technology for humanitarian rescue work.
As the commander, Bitou holds significant authority and is ultimately responsible for all operations, having been officially appointed to his post by the Prime Minister. He is largely a calm and paternal figure who watches over the young cadets with a gentle, supportive demeanor. He trusts their abilities and encourages their growth, even when their unorthodox methods lead to successful rescues. However, this outward warmth is paired with a tendency towards secrecy. He has a notable habit of withholding critical information from his team, particularly regarding the origins of Stealth Robo and his past connection to Doctor Kaiser, even when keeping these secrets endangers those under his command. Despite this flaw, his fundamental motivation is the protection of life, not destruction, and he is dedicated to the success of Machine Robo Rescue as a non-military institution.
Bitou’s role in the story is that of the strategic leader and authority figure. He oversees the selection of young cadets, appoints unit instructors, and gives the final approval for major missions. His leadership is tested as the past he tried to leave behind resurfaces in the form of Kaiser-G and Stealth Robo. In these moments, he shows unwavering faith in his team, trusting in the cadets he has trained to overcome threats that his own earlier work created. His key relationships include that with his daughter, Marie Bitou, who works closely with him as an instructor for the Yellow Gears team. Their relationship is largely professional but has moments of familial levity, such as when Marie has to pull her father away from offering unsolicited and embarrassing romantic advice to a young cadet. He also works closely with Professor Tōru Suidōbashi, the grandson of his former partner, to continually develop new Machine Robo models for rescue purposes.
Throughout the series, Bitou undergoes significant development primarily in how he confronts his past. Initially secretive about the destructive origins of the Machine Robo project, the return of Stealth Robo and Kaiser-G forces him to eventually confess his role in their creation to the entire team. This moment of honesty marks a turning point, allowing for the reformation of the rogue robot and its pilot, who then join the rescue team as the Stealth Team. Later, when Kaiser-G escalates his attack to a global scale, Bitou provides a rousing speech on the power of teamwork that inspires the cadets to their final victory.
Bitou is a figure of notable personal abilities and quirks. He is a talented pianist, capable of playing without looking at the keyboard or sheet music, and often has a piano in his office. He has several catchphrases, including stating that those who hinder rescue efforts must be removed, affirming that their purpose is to save lives, and giving his formal permission for a mission to launch. By the end of the series, he steps down from his role as the first chief of Machine Robo Rescue, handing over the Japanese branch to a trusted instructor. He then departs to found a new international organization, International Hyper Rescue, expanding his vision of saving lives on a global scale.
