Description
Jūzō Naniwa is a core member of the Battle Team, the group of five young pilots who operate the giant super robot, serving as the second-in-command. Born on April 1, 1958, in Osaka, he is eighteen years old when the story takes place. Before joining the Nanbara Connection to defend Earth from the alien Campbellian invasion, Jūzō worked as a professional sniper, a career that made full use of his preternatural talent for marksmanship. This talent was evident from a very young age, as he won his first sharpshooting tournament when he was only eight years old.

Jūzō is best characterized by his cool, level-headed, and pragmatic nature. He often serves as a calm and steadying counterbalance to the team's hot-blooded and impulsive leader, Hyouma Aoi. While he can be cynical and sarcastic, his actions are always rooted in logic and a desire for the team's success. Despite his usual composure, he shares a similar short-tempered streak to Hyouma, which leads to frequent arguments between the two. However, these conflicts are rarely severe, often coming across as the bickering of two very similar people rather than a genuine, dramatic rivalry. When Hyouma is absent or unable to lead, Jūzō reliably assumes command, directing the team's combat strategies with his sharp tactical acumen.

His primary motivation is the protection of his comrades and the successful completion of their mission against the Campbellian threat. His loyalty to the team is unwavering, and his judiciousness makes him an indispensable and reliable asset, especially in moments when leadership falters. While he prioritizes collective success, his interactions with the other pilots are marked by deep respect. He shares a particularly notable, if combative, bond with Hyouma, whom he has been known to call a monkey.

Jūzō's role in the story is defined by his function as the team's expert marksman and strategist. He is the pilot of the Battle Crusher, the vehicle that forms the chest and arms of Combattler V, making his role in the combined robot's combat operations critical. On the ground, his abilities extend beyond piloting. In several key situations, his sharpshooting skills have directly rescued the team from impossible odds. In one notable instance, he was forced to face a brainwashed Inspector Maoka, his former mentor and a father figure who taught him to shoot. The inspector was holding a hostage, and Jūzō resolved the crisis not by shooting the man, but by firing a single, perfectly calculated ricochet to shatter the mind-control device attached to the enemy's weapon.

Beyond his unparalleled skill with a rifle, which is considered Olympic-class, he is also highly proficient with any one-handed firearm. His tactical genius was demonstrated during a mission when he was temporarily blinded. Rather than being incapacitated, he used his other senses and analytical mind to perfectly predict every movement of an attacking Magma Beast, proving that his effectiveness in battle is not solely dependent on his eyesight.
