Shunji Yamada

Description
Shunji Yamada is the birth name of a prominent Japanese voice actor and narrator, who later adopted the stage name Keaton Yamada. He was born on October 25, 1945, in Mikasa, Hokkaido. After beginning his career in 1970, he initially worked under his real name for about a decade before changing his stage name to Keaton Yamada in the early 1980s, a name inspired by the silent film comedian Buster Keaton.

Yamada's career is marked by a significant number of roles in classic anime from the 1970s, particularly in the mecha and superhero genres. He is well-known for voicing the hot-blooded character Hayato Jin in the seminal series Getter Robo, a role he also performed in various related works and video games for many years. Another early and specific role was as the Mycenaean Empire general Birdaler in the series Great Mazinger. He also contributed his voice to the 1975 documentary-style short film Kore ga UFO da! Soratobu Enban, which depicted famous UFO incidents; in this production, he provided voices for figures such as pilot Kenneth Arnold and abductee Barney Hill.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he built a reputation as a versatile performer, often taking on roles as mentors, rivals, or narrators. His filmography includes Albert Heinrich, also known as 004, in Cyborg 009, Juuzou Naniwa in Combattler V, Tony Harken in Wakusei Robo Danguard A, and Jamaican Daninghan in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. He also played roles in series like Saint Seiya as Lyumnades Caça and provided the voice of the Hammer Bros. in the 1986 Super Mario Bros. anime film.

Despite his many character roles, his most enduring and widely recognized performance came later in his career. Starting in 1990, he became the beloved narrator for the long-running and immensely popular anime series Chibi Maruko-chan. His distinctive narration became a signature element of the show for three decades. In addition to his anime work, he also lent his voice to Japanese dubs of foreign films, such as the 1989 TBS edition of Galaxy of Terror.

Shunji Yamada, known for most of his career as Keaton Yamada, retired from voice acting in March 2021, stepping down from his role as the narrator of Chibi Maruko-chan the same year.
