Description
Amaso is a character from the anime Kotetsushin Jeeg, serving as one of the secondary antagonists and a loyal subordinate to the primary villain, Queen Himika. His background is tied to an ancient galactic war, during which he fought alongside Himika and other allies. After this conflict, the group landed on Earth. While some members of their party chose to live peacefully, Amaso remained with Himika and her faction in their goal to destroy the planet. This led to a battle that resulted in Amaso, Himika, and their forces being sealed away by the sword Sakahoko. They briefly escaped the seal only to be resealed by the original Jeeg, Hiroshi Shiba. Fifty years later, the seal was broken once more, freeing Amaso to resume his activities.
In terms of personality, Amaso displays a notable contradiction. He is often childish, prone to complaining about his opponents' actions in battle, such as when he whined about the Jeegs kicking him. However, this immaturity is paired with a genuine cruelty, as he happily commands the destructive Haniwa Phantom Gods to rampage through towns without any remorse. He also maintains a constant and petty rivalry with a fellow subordinate named Mimashi, with the pair frequently arguing, such as over who should control a Haniwa Phantom God during a mission.
Amaso's primary role in the story is as one of Queen Himika's active field commanders, sent to carry out her plans to conquer Earth and reclaim the powerful Bronze Bells. He is directly involved in several key operations, including an early scheme where he kidnapped the protagonist Kenji's younger sister, Mayumi Shiba, to use her as a hostage to force the delivery of a bell. He also participated in attempts to retrieve a second bell from the Kotetsu Jeeg robot, which involved kidnapping another character, Tsubaki. His role extends to direct combat, where he fought against the heroes' allies and later engaged the Kotetsu Jeeg itself. After a long series of battles, he was eventually disintegrated by the Double Spin Storm attack. Even after his physical destruction, his spirit was summoned by Himika to become part of the giant monster Susanoh, where he met his final end when that creature was destroyed.
Key relationships define much of his actions. He is utterly subservient to Queen Himika, following all her orders without question. His most prominent peer relationship is his antagonistic rivalry with Mimashi, which is marked by constant bickering and blame-shifting whenever their plans fail. He also has a direct adversarial relationship with the protagonists, particularly the pilot Kenji and the original Jeeg, Hiroshi Shiba, viewing them as obstacles to be eliminated.
Throughout the series, Amaso shows little personal development, remaining a consistently cruel and childish antagonist. His primary evolution is in the escalation of his direct involvement, from commanding monsters from the sidelines to personally entering the fray. His notable abilities include the power to control and command the massive Haniwa Phantom Gods, using them as weapons against the heroes. In direct combat, he can enlarge his own body to giant size to fight the Kotetsu Jeeg on equal footing. In this enlarged form, he can generate and fire sharp crystals from his back as projectiles and unleash shockwaves to attack his enemies.
