Description
Rag Uralo is a main character in the anime Combat Mecha Xabungle, introduced as the leader of the Sand Rats, a small band of desert bandits. She is a teenage girl with short blue hair and blue eyes, and she is first seen when the group encounters the young wanderer Jiron Amos in the desert. Rag and her companions take Jiron in, and she plays a central part in helping him carry out his plan to steal the powerful Walker Machine known as the Xabungle from the trader Carrying Cargo. After the theft and the chaos that follows, Rag joins the crew of the giant landship Iron Gear, where she remains one of the central figures for much of the story.
In personality, Rag is headstrong, independent, and quick to speak her mind, with a tough outer manner that suits her life as a desert bandit. She is not afraid to fight for what she wants and is a capable and courageous combatant who takes part in numerous battles against enemy pilots and soldiers. Beneath her rough exterior, she shows a more caring side, as she develops genuine concern for the people she travels with and for the civilians caught up in the larger conflict between the ruling Innocent and the oppressed inhabitants of the planet. Her motivations are initially tied to survival and self-interest; she is loyal first to herself and her own group, and she does not hold deep devotion to the Iron Gear, at times even entertaining the idea of stealing the landship for herself. Over time, however, her connections to the crew give her a stronger sense of purpose and belonging.
Her role in the story is significant as one of the principal members of the Iron Gear's crew, taking part in many of the group's clashes with rival Breakers and the forces of the Innocent. Her key relationships include her partnership with Jiron, whom she first aids as an ally and later stands beside through the group's many trials, and her bond with her fellow Sand Rats Blume, Dyke, and Chill, whom she leads from the start. She also develops a meaningful connection with Elchi Cargo, another central character, as the two share the dangers and hardships of life aboard the Iron Gear.
A notable turning point in her development comes when she leaves the Iron Gear after falling in love with a subordinate of the antagonist Kid Horla. That romance ends in tragedy when the man is killed in battle, and the loss leaves a mark on her and shapes her emotional journey through the series. Through this experience and her continued involvement in the escalating conflict, she grows from a self-reliant bandit leader with loose loyalties into a more emotionally invested member of the group, though she retains the independent and spirited nature that defines her. In the compilation film Xabungle Graffiti, which presents an alternate conclusion to the story, she is shown claiming Jiron for herself after events take a different turn. Her notable abilities include her combat skill, her courage under fire, and the toughness and resourcefulness that allow her to hold her own in the dangerous world of the series.
