TV-Series
Description
Kōji Hoshiyama is a fifth-grade student at Hinobori Academy and a member of the Earth Defense Class, the group of children entrusted with protecting Earth from the evil Jaaku Empire. He is one of the three main pilots of the super robot Raijin‑Oh, specifically piloting the lion‑shaped mecha Juu‑Oh. When the three core robots combine into Raijin‑Oh or God Raijin‑Oh, Kōji is responsible for power control and weapon operation, managing the robot’s offensive and defensive systems from the cockpit.
Kōji is gentle, kind‑hearted, and somewhat timid by nature. He is not particularly athletic and often finds himself swept along by the louder, more assertive personalities of his teammates. However, beneath his quiet exterior lies a deep well of inner strength and perseverance. In moments of crisis he is able to summon genuine courage, overcoming his initial fears and acting decisively to protect others. His first experience piloting Juu‑Oh was marked by fear and hesitation, but through each battle he learns to trust himself and his comrades, growing steadily more confident over the course of the series.
He has a strong fascination with the unknown. Kōji believes in UFOs and extraterrestrial life, and he is rarely seen without a pair of binoculars, which he uses to scan the sky for anything unusual. This interest leads him to join the school’s astronomy club. His curiosity extends to writing as well; he enjoys composing stories and has written scripts for school theatrical performances, displaying a creative and thoughtful side. His dream for the future is to become either a science‑fiction writer or an astronaut.
Within the Earth Defense Class, Kōji looks up to Jin Hyuga, the main pilot of Ken‑Oh, who is bold and energetic. Jin often drags him into adventures, and Kōji’s admiration for Jin helps motivate him to push past his own limitations. He also works closely with Asuka Tsukishiro, the pilot of Hou‑Oh, whose calm and analytical approach balances Jin’s impulsiveness. Together the three form the core pilot team, and their mutual trust is essential for the successful operation of Raijin‑Oh. Outside of combat, Kōji maintains a pen‑pal friendship with a younger girl named Kozue Yamaguchi, whom he met during a school trip, showing his capacity for sincere, long‑distance relationships.
Kōji’s development is marked by a gradual shift from timidity to steady reliability. While he starts as the most hesitant of the three pilots, he proves time and again that he can stand firm when it matters most. He also supports his classmates when they struggle with their own weaknesses, offering encouragement that helps them grow. His narration frames many episodes, providing a reflective, earnest perspective on the events the Earth Defense Class faces. By the end of the series, Kōji has become a courageous and dependable member of the team, still kind‑hearted but no longer defined by his fears.
