Description
Cyclonus is a Decepticon who serves as Galvatron's loyal second-in-command. He was originally created from the remains of a battle-damaged Decepticon by the planet-eating entity Unicron, reborn as a powerful warrior to serve the newly reformatted Galvatron. His defining characteristic is an exceptionally intense loyalty to Galvatron and the Decepticon cause, a trait so strong that it leaves little room for other emotions or personal ambitions. Despite possessing the intelligence, power, and initiative to potentially rule the Decepticons himself, Cyclonus has no desire to do so and consistently defers to his leader. However, this loyalty is often tested by Galvatron's erratic and sometimes abusive behavior, as the Decepticon leader is prone to bouts of insanity and violence.
Within the narrative of Transformers: The Headmasters, Cyclonus appears alongside his fellow Unicron creation, Scourge, though their roles are significantly reduced from their prominence in the original American animated series. Here, they are largely sidelined as the focus shifts to the new Headmaster warriors. Cyclonus's personality is notably altered, becoming less of a formidable and cunning lieutenant and more of an insecure and somewhat bumbling underling. He appears threatened by the arrival of Galvatron's newer, more powerful lieutenant, Sixshot, and often finds himself in situations that provide moments of comic relief. In one instance, he attempts to drop a rock on Rodimus Prime during a battle on the planet Beast but accidentally hits Galvatron in the face instead, fleeing in fear afterward. He also feels discouraged when Galvatron publicly declares that all of his troops are incompetent, without making a special exception for him.
Despite these diminished portrayals, Cyclonus remains a loyal soldier, fighting alongside Galvatron in key battles, such as against Optimus Prime on Cybertron. He and Scourge manage to reach the supercomputer Vector Sigma before the Autobots, engaging Prime in combat at the planet's core. After Galvatron vanishes during Cybertron's destruction and the unfamiliar Decepticon Scorponok takes command, Cyclonus feels increasingly insecure about his position. He vows to steal a new energy-absorbing satellite named Sol 1 to gain favor with the new leader, though this plan is ultimately repelled by the Autobot Headmasters. He also has a notable relationship with Scourge, the pair often operating as a unit, but with Cyclonus generally taking the lead.
During his time on the planet Nebulos, Cyclonus undergoes the process of becoming a Targetmaster. His oxidating laser weapon is transformed into an exo-suit for a Nebulan named Nightstick, who becomes his partner. This grants Cyclonus enhanced targeting abilities and firepower. In his vehicle mode, he transforms into a powerful Cybertronian jet fighter capable of space flight and can expand in size to carry Galvatron. His personal motto, often stated on his toy packaging, is Compassion is the Autobots' downfall.
