Description
Misfire is a Decepticon Targetmaster and aerial warrior who appears in the Japanese anime Transformers: The Headmasters. He transforms into a proton-powered jet fighter and is partnered with the Nebulan Aimless, who becomes his ion particle blaster. Misfire's background is defined by his astonishing incompetence as a marksman. He holds the record for enrolling and failing the Decepticon Military College four thousand six hundred and twenty-seven times, only graduating because the Autobots destroyed the facility. Despite his persistent claims that his aim is improving, no other Decepticon shares this confidence, and his fellow soldiers routinely take cover when he opens fire.

Personality-wise, Misfire is extremely enthusiastic and energetic, often overheating with excitement at the prospect of combat. He throws himself into battle with all guns blazing and does not stop shooting until he runs out of ammunition, which usually happens before he hits anything of value. His braggadocio and loud self-congratulation frequently annoy other Decepticons, particularly the Headmaster Weirdwolf, who grows irritated by the Targetmasters' boasting. Misfire's motivation is simply a love of fighting and a desire to prove himself, though his lack of skill undermines his efforts. Megatron values him not for accuracy but for his ability to spread terror unpredictably, since the randomness of his fire makes anyone a potential target.

In the story, Misfire is part of a trio of Decepticon Targetmasters alongside Slugslinger and Triggerhappy. Their campaigns often take place far from Cybertron and Earth, battling Autobot Targetmasters such as Pointblank, Sureshot, and Crosshairs on deep space missions. During the siege of the planet Master, Misfire allies with Scorponok. After a plasma energy explosion, he becomes permanently binary-bonded to Aimless, a former Nebulan construction engineer who habitually overlooked building defects for bribes. Aimless is a sleazy con-man who, once transformed into Misfire's weapon, does not even bother to aim, making the pair's shooting abilities abysmally poor.

Misfire's key relationships include his close partnership with Aimless, his rivalry with the Autobot Targetmasters, and his interactions with fellow Decepticons like Sixshot and Weirdwolf. He sometimes displays poor interpersonal skills, getting into arguments with other Decepticons. Over the course of the series, Misfire participates in numerous conflicts, including the defense of Scorponok's ship, battles on asteroids, and the final showdown on Earth. On one occasion during a conflict on Earth, he accidentally shoots Slugslinger in the back, then flees into space after Slugslinger's failed coup against Megatron. Later, in the year 2021, he fights for Scorponok again in a scheme involving a black hole, which instead shrinks his body and causes Aimless to vanish.

Notable abilities include his jet mode, which gives him a maximum speed of one thousand two hundred miles per hour and a range of one thousand two hundred miles. He is equipped with over-the-horizon pulse-Doppler radar that can spot aircraft within a seven-hundred-mile radius. He can use Aimless in blaster mode in both robot and jet forms. However, his primary weakness is his terrible accuracy, which is only partially compensated by his aggressiveness and above-average maneuverability. Despite his flaws, Misfire remains an unrelenting and persistent opponent, always eager for the next fight.
